Elk & Buffalo vs Contender
« on: November 16, 2005, 08:03:00 AM »
Some time back, maybe 6 or 8 months ago, i traded for an SSK 45/70 barrel on this forum..cant remember who i made the deal with, but whoever it was, many thanks..that barrel is charmed! Or maybe i just got lucky, but whatever the case, here are the photos of last week's hunt:

Elk:

Buffalo

Needless to say..i'm pretty happy with the trade!  :D I hope the person i traded has enjoyed the .223 they got from me & that it brings them luck as well...

Congrats on the great hunts. Can you give some details on the lads you were using? I just got back from elk hunting with a rifle and I am thiking about using a handgun on the next elk trip next year. I am trying to decide on the caliber. Ant information is appreciated.

I had finally settled on 42.0 grain H4198, & the Hornady 350 grain SP. I shoot the 300 grainers for deer but they are soft & open up a bit too much. The shot that took the buffalo shot nearly all the way through & was found under the hide on the offside..the one that i got the elk with sailed on through. Damage was good in both insttances. That load was good 3 shot groups of about 1.5" at 100, and 5 shot groups of around 2". The 300 grainers shot better but i think they are too soft if you hit a leg bone..

Be sure to reduce the loads by 10% to start in your gun..my barrel is by SSK & TC factory tubes may have different chamber or bore dimensions that affect pressures. Recoil is stout...the last shot, which was the elk, trashed the 2x Leupold on the gun & it sounds like a baby rattle & you can see parts rattling around in there. I am sending it back, i have torn up others & they fixed them or replaced them.

good luck hunting!

Good job!

I've never shot anything that big with my Contender 14 inch 45.-70, but it is a potent rig with custom ammo!

I always liked the 45/70..but i might be likin' it even more now... :)

i got the expanded bullet from the buffalo, it was just under the hide on the offside. The one from the elk sailed on through...

i had wanted to use a .358JDJ when i had planned on this hunt but i ended up trading that barrel & this was the next best thing i thought..dont think i could ask for better performance...
