Looking for the one good load for my SRH 454. 7-1/2" I'm using 300grn XTP mags . I'm getting 5" groups @ 100yds. is this all the gun has?? my .44 SRH does much better than that

What works good in my gun may not work good in your gun. Load development, it is just what some of us have to do to get accurate loads.

You failed to mention if that's with a scope or iron sights. If irons then I'd say it's likely as good as you can expect. If scoped then I dunno, still might be as good as you and it can do. In my experience the Rugers don't do a lot better than that generally speaking. Some do, most don't.

How well can YOU shoot at that distance with other revolvers? What sighting equipment is being used? These answer might help.

You have to take into consideration that 5" at 100 yards is equivalent to 2.5" at 50 yards and 1.25" at 25 yards. Both of those are generally considered pretty darn good shooting and if with iron sights exceptional shooting. So why is 5" at 100 such a concern to you?

The 454 has a 2.5x8 T/C hangun scope, the 44.mag has a 2.5x leupold
I'm a decent shot , and have had alot of range time .I've coverd all of the basics like , scope, trigger control and what not. The muzzle blast dosen't bother me. I'm just looking for other 454 SRH owners to see what kind of results they get. I haven't taken this gun afield yet but was hoping to use it for this years gun season in Ohio. I agree 5" is nothing to scoff at but I just want the groups at least as good as the 44.

If you are a reloader, then you will have some work to do if you want tighter groups.  Each gun has a certain preference for ammo.  If all you shoot is factory loads, then you should get several boxes of different factory ammo with different weight bullets, and try shooting groups with each. That could run into several hundreds of dollars, given the very large number of factory loads on the market today, but it's the only way to hopefully find the particular ammo your gun likes best.  Mine shoots very well with the Winchester Supreme 260 gr Nosler partition. On a good day with a shooting glove and a 4x Leupold, I can get  3 shot 1.5" groups at 50 yards. The gun might be able to do better, but I can't.  And since I limit my hunting shots to about 50-75 yards, that level of accuracy works for me.  Good luck in your accurate ammo quest.....

  I have been reloading almost 20 years, I lust haven't had a gun stump me like this. I've never really believed in getting a bad gun as far as accuracy. but I guess this could be my first. The only factory rounds I've fired through my gun are the hornady 240 XTP/mags..I'm learning the Cassul is a different kind of gun....

Are your bullets jumping crimp, shoot 3 then pop out the remaining ones to see. If they do a Redding Profile Crimp Die should help a lot, crimp it really tight so that the case mouth looks like a shiny halo.  
      My other recomendation is to slug the barrel for smoothness and Firelap if it needs it, it probably will, with a LBT kit. Order around 300 bullets as Ruger stainless steel is one of the most abrasion resistant steels out there, mine took 225 and it could probably use 50 or so more, this has worked wonders for my SRH .44mag

id be more then happy with 5 inch 100 yard groups in any handgun. Some may beat it but thats still a good shootin handgun
