Does anyone on this forum have one of the  405 Ruger No. 1's?. I have an 1895 Winchester in 405 with the Lyman 38 receiver sight on it and like it a lot.  There was a good article in Rifle Handloader a couple of months ago about loads for the 405 Winchester. Anyways I have been thinking about picking up a Ruger in 405.  I have a Ruger No. 1 RSI in 30-06 that has always been a very accurate albeit somewhat lightweight rifle.  I figure the Tropical setup will weigh a little more and would still benefit from a decent recoil pad.  I had a Pachmyar pad put on the 1895 that made a tremendous difference.  Your thoughts?  - Mike

I've had mine for a couple of months now. Worked up some good loads using the 300gr Hornady SP, just can't wait to try it out on some of the game we have here in the Yukon.
Overall I'm impressed with the rifle so far only a few minor mods need be done that should have been done at the Ruger factory.

What mods have you performed to date? Just curious, as I've been toying w/ the idea of picking one up.

I've got a #1-S in 45-70, & really enjoy it. My biggest gripe is that the safety should be "inletted" slightly into the receiver, instead of sitting right on top to interfere w/ smooth brass ejection.

First thing I did was radius the top of the breech block. The factory knife edge catches on the mouth of the loaded round when its open and you drop a round in the channel cut in the breech block. It should be a smooth transition just like water flowing through a funnel. Makes  for a quicker follow up shot. IMHO.
Radius a few other sharp edges found on the loading ramp area, may not improve feeding but sure keeps one's fingers from sufferin the odd cut.
Still trying to figure out a quick fix for that poor excuse they call a trigger.

I've got a "Martini Hagen" worked over Ruger #1 Stnls. Laminated stock,45/70 that is a work of art. Great checkering job, fully blueprinted action, incredible trigger, 19" barrel, Firesight front sight along with a NECG rear peep. Weighs in at a mere 6 lbs, 33" OAL. Very practical to pack and pushes out a 350gr bullet at just over 2500fps {ouch}!

I'm not familiar w/ Martini Hagen, but it sure sounds...... NICE - & handy.  Got any pics for our viewing pleasure?

The factory open sights on these rifles do leave a bit to be desired. I mounted a Leupold VX-II 2-7X33 on mine, right after my first trip to the range.

Guess I got lucky w/ mine. Although the wood is quite plain, she's got a good trigger, & is a shooter - w/ the right load. Seems to prefer 405 gas checked.

I have been reading info from this site for quite a while but just now noticed somthing that I should probably post to....
 A couple of years ago I bought one of the new winchester 95's in .405, neat gun.  Worked up some good loads for it with the hornady 300 gr sp that shot very well for such a beast.
Here in kansas we have a late doe season and I decided to try out the new toy and sure enough a nice doe came by late in the evening, presented a beautiful broadside shot at 100 yards.  Perfect!! I decided not to take a shoulder shot and put it just behind her shoulder, beautiful hit.  Only problem is, she didn't even come close to going down so I shot her again in the same place. The second bullet finally penetrated in to the vitals, couldn't believe it but the first bullet did not penetrate at all. I have never tried this again, I did get some woodleigh bullets but have not tried them.... Be very carefull with the hornady 300 grain bullets, my experience was not good at all.....

About two years ago in Rifle Handloader Phil Shoemaker reported a similar result shooting Hornady 405 bullets at deer.  I have been using the 300 grain Barnes X bullets.  They also shoot a little flatter. Woodleigh makes 300 and 400 grain bullets for the 405.

Michael, I have tried the barns 300 grain X bullet also and find them to look very promising. It's been a while but it seems like around 50 grains of 3031 shoots very well.

 After my bad experience on the first time out with the .405, I find it much easier to use my 6.5 mannlicher and never worry about penetration or if the deer is going down. Good point of the should shot and they are finished...Spoiled I guess...

53 grains of IMR 4895 works well also. 2104 fps in my 1895. Your mileage may vary. - Mike

Thanks Michael, we have a good supply of 4895 around here as my son & I shoot the hipower matches a lot and that's a standard powder here.

My son just picked up a #1 Tropical in 405 WCF. We are getting set to work-up a nice cast bullet load. We might even play with paper patching.

Great gun, great round.

Iam not to fond of the jacketed bullets available for it. I think they lack penetration thus our planned experments with patched bullets.

This is a really old thread but if anyone is watching.  I have a #1 Tropical in 458 Lott.  I was fortunate and found the trigger to be ok for the caliber.  This is NOT a varmit rifle.  I did however have a Limb Saver recoil pad put on it and a mercury recoil supressor put in the stock. I needed a little longer pull and the Number One is a hard recoiling rifle.

HI Friends

I have a new Ruger RSI in 30-06. IF Saturday comes without rain I will take it deer hunting for the first time. You could say I trust the rifle and expect great things. If I get a shot at a buck it will be the first time the rifle has been fired. I am home recuperating from Quadruple heart surgery. After being released I cracked my brest bone again so I have not even shot this rifle. Yes I am again released to shoot.
