7mm mag. or 300win mag.
« on: November 30, 2005, 11:47:46 AM »
I am looking to purchase a new encore frame in the next few months and researching cal.I have a 300yd.+ shot at deer(used to long handgun range shooting member of IHMSA)anyone have exspereance with either the encore in the 7mm mag or 300 win.mag.(used to recoil now have 10"444 marlin in g2,love it)hows the recoil and accuracy.Would rather be a little over powered, tend to like one shot kills and shoot for that.A nut for accuracy and I reload.I practice, practice, practice.

Thanks to ya'll :-)

mervin444, I think a better choice would be one of the JDJ rounds off of the 30-06 case.  They blow out the case and use a 60 degree neck to achieve rifle velocities in 15" barrels.  I am not sure of what diameter bullet you prefer but the 280 JDJ does 2850 fps with a 140 grn bullet.  The 06 JDJ does 2700 fps with a 165 grn.  If you like the 6.5's he has one off of the 220 swift case that does 2700 with the 140 grn and 2900 fps with a 120 grn.

If you are set on the 7 MAg or the 300wm then try gary reeder, I know he sells 15" barrels in thoase calibers.

30-06 with 165 Hornady light magnum factory ammunition, Interbond bullet blew right through Mule deer @136 yards.

2700 FPS with this load and will drive 3/4 inch or less off the bench @100 and 3.5 inches@ 300 yards.  Great accuracy and awesome ballistics from the old 30-06 in the 15 inch Encore ...recoil is not bad , controllable and not punishing.  rubber grips and the 15' heavy bull barrel helps. keeps the anticipation down for the real long shots where a clean trigger breakon target is really needed. Just my opinion.

This is my 300 yard Elk load as well.

Patrick.

Thats a tough one,Im a huge fan of the 7mag but if your buying one just for elk,I would go with the 300,great long range accuracy and knock down,if your buying a rifle for elk go big,it works.
If it aint fair chase its FOUL,and illegal in my state!

Thanks I am familliar with JDJ rounds I have a 300 Whisper from him,I prefer 28 cal.and up.The 280 jdj sounds good, going to my rcbs program and check out the trajectory and energy. Both looks like a good 400 to 450 yd.gun.(If the boys at the hunting club were amazed at a kill from the 444 marlin at 200yds.wait until I show up with what ever one I decide on)  :o Thanks for the help and still looking wanting the best for my money.

If I'm not mistaken, he's talking a handgun caliber.

I went thru the same questions a few year ago and came to the conclusion that a 308 in a custom barrel that was 16 1/4 was the way to go. I don't think you will get complete powder burn as most magnum use a slow burning powder. I was told that the 308 was designed to use a 18 " barrel with fast burning power to get the velocity up quick.  I am looking at Barnes Triple shock and Hornady SSTs in 140 to 165 gr.
Fred at Bullberry recomended the Barnes X in 140gr for up to Elk.
