Happy 50th my 99f

I had the good fortune in getting a nice 10 point with my muzzleloader, but what i'm really looking forward to is just sitting in the woods, for the rifle opener Saturday with the classiest deer rifle I've ever seen. I remember going to the hardware store with my dad to pick it up 50 years ago!!!

Nice buck... congratulations!!!

Like you, I also get that "special feeling" when I'm sitting in the woods with my 1953 Model 99 (late "EG" model) in .300 Savage caliber.

Ain't it fun to hunt with a "classic" rifle in a "classic" caliber?!?

Ron.. I love the sharp way you provide info on the 99. I have learned a lot from you. Being a hunter, and not a range guy.. I always laughed at jargon talk, frequently saying "I ain't got targets or chronographs in my freezer"! I still don't, but you've enlightened me. I have been fortunate to have shot  deer in 6 decades. While I become very selective at times, I have a ball with my 99f, and the thoughts of my Dad and his .300 Savage
bring back much better times of plaid mackinaws, and beat up Oldsmobiles... A far stretch from scent lock and Hummers.
I'll be 60 next year, and I stay in shape. I want at least 20 more years of this fun. I'm hoping for a small doe tomorrow with my 99. to compliment my muzzleloader 10 point. I'll gut immediately and filet on the spot. What a treat venison liver tomorrow night would be!!!

Thanx, "Scotty"...

Like you, I've hunted in a lot of different decades (the '40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and now the 2000's - started hunting at age 13 in 1949) and I'm looking at the big "SEVEN-OH" next February... so you're just a "kid" comparatively.  Hahahahahahaha....

I, too, try to stay in "shape", but the ravages of the years as well as my age are beginning to "tell" on me.  I am reminded of my "situation" by the relatively new song I've been hearing on the radio lately... "I Ain't As Good As I Once Was, But I'm As Good, ONCE, As I Ever Was".

Oh... I can still get out there and hunt a full day, but my bones get weavy faster now... and I take shorter steps and climb a bit slower... and I look for help when it comes to dragging the deer back to camp.  But I think I've got another 10 years "in" me yet... if some major "part" doesn't give out in the ol' "bod" first, that is.   :-)

In fact, this year... I'm going to "volunteer" to carry the rifles and let my two sons and my Godson DRAG the deer... even if it's MY deer!   :-D

Hang in there, my friend... and may ya have another THIRTY years in the deer woods!!!

Well the doe deal didn't work out. I scrutinized over a very big thick wide 4 point, finally taking him with my 99f. I only shoot corelok 180's. I recovered the most perfect 100% retention bullet mushroom I can recall.
I mean I haven't seen one in a magazine better! Deer went down and didn't move... I fileted on the spot, and into the backpack.
