Hey guys,

I am writing an essay in sociology about how the shooting community, specifially the NRA, is a culture of its own.  Any input from you guys would be greatly appreciated.  I am looking for features of our culture that shape it, such as language (terms), clubs, what makes us different from other cultures, how we make an impact in our society etc...

Once again anything that you can think of would be helpful...thanks again!

Suggest you rethink your essay - You'll either get an F or have to make up lies:

The shooting community, specifially the NRA, is NOT a culture all its own.  Its people from all across the USA North/South East/West Rich/Poor and many different ethnic groups!

Raz,
You can play the game in college, like I learned to do, and get good marks, or you can speak the truth and get bad marks.  "Hunt with a camera" got me an A; "The development of the bayonet" got me a C;  "Why marijuana should be legal" got me an A;  "Axes and their uses" got me a D.
You want an A, talk about Phallic symbols, blood sport, murder and mayhem!  :roll:  But don't say, "shooting is just plain fun".  :wink:

I don't know what your timeline is for finishing your essay is, but I'd suggest that you read the book "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross.

It's a fiction, but the story-line is chock full of accurate contextual references to the history and development of the modern "gun-culture".

Other than that, spend some time perusing the NRA website.

There are several different points of view on what the NRA is all about, and from gun-owner to gun-owner, you'll get any one of those different points of view.

What, more specifically, is your essay about?

Is it about the NRA, gun-owners, shooting sports, hunting, the 2nd Amendment, or...what?

well the instructions were basically to pick a subculture from the American society and specically focus on an orgination within that culture.  I picked the NRA so half the paper I just talked about the history and all the things the NRA does for us as shooters, hunters, etc.  I basically just wanted some insight from actual members of the "gun-culture" as to what makes it its own culture.  IE: terms that us as part of the culture would only know that an outsider would not, how generally we are a patriotic type of people, strongly believe in the constitution and so on.  Other details would be helpful if you could tell me how you feel the people that are associated with your gun clubs are...I have seen that a lot of people at the gun ranges are super friendly and helpful with giving advice on set up and technique.  Anything you can think of along those lines would help alot.  

FWiedner thanks for the suggestion, the essay is actually due in about a week so I probably wouldn't have time to read it but I may go pick it up anyways as I need something to read anyways.  Thanks again!
