Experiences with Buying MilSurp Garands from CMP?
« on: November 22, 2005, 02:00:08 PM »
I was recently reading through a co-workers American Rifleman and saw an ad for the CMP selling MILSURP M1 Garands.

I checked out their site, and the prices for the Garands.

Was wondering if anyone has experience purchasing MILSURP from the CMP?  Advisable?  Bad idea?

Also, how 'bad' are the Field Grades?  I do not understand the '3 muzzle wear' descipipton from the site (as I am a MILSURP novice).

Thanks for your help everyone...

The muzzle wear pertains to the extent of bore wear done at the muzzle from cleaning. How much the wear affects accuracy is hard to quantify, though if a muzzle is worn out, it isn't going to shoot well.

I don't know much about the field grade rifles. I bought a Service grade rifle a couple of years ago and its an outstanding rifle, worth every penny.

As for the rack grades, I think most people buy these for 2 reasons: To fill a niche in their collection, or they have plans of rebarreling them. Some of the rack grades are going to be good shooters, and probably some of them are shot out- kind of a pig in a poke chance when buying.

It will become a disease!!  don't even get started.. but log on to their web site at   www.odcmp.com..    check out sales,, rifles,  M1s,  Springfields,, you can print out a qualification form and order form right there.. Stay away from the North Store at Camp Perry Ohio,,   it has been the demise of many good solid marriages...   HTH.. Les   and by the way, all my M1s are good shooters,, even the greek return rack grades for $295  (no longer available,, thank god!!)
