sell a contender barrel and keep just the frame.  I have a 14" 30-30 barrel and don't really want to get rid of the frame since it's a SST Contender.  Figure I could change it to a rifle later on down the road for one of the kids.

You sure can, the frame must be sold as a firearm, the barrels can be sold by themselves without transfer through a FFL.
