I got the 336CS in .35 Remington, but I won't be happy unless I get its long barreled cousin, the 1895 Cowboy in 45-70

Sounds like a plan to me! My father bought me a 336CS 35 Rem. when I was 16 (1990). I bought a 444 Mar. about 5 years ago. I got the 444 Mar. for black bear and wild boar hunting, haven't hunted either yet! :(

Well, we got the black bears here in Montana, and I've not gotten one yet either.  I just haven't gotten the tag again this year... I keep missing the deadline for the application, scored 100% on our bear test.

Maybe some day though, I'll get a chance to hunt both bears here in Montana and hogs in another state.

Hey Montanan......

Whatcha gonna do with that Cowboy 45/70? Looks like it ought to be a might heavy if you plan to pack it.....especially with that long magazine tube. But, I suppose, if yer goin to be riding, who cares!

I sure have enjoyed my 1895GS this past year......a whole lotta fun gettin thumped by it!

I'm sure you will really like it. Marlin Cowboy shooters are a class act!

The Marlin Cowboy with its 9 round tube is actually on the light side at 8 pounds.  The 1895 GS is 7 pounds with 4 rounds.  Here is what I am packin right now.

This is a Remington #1 Rolling Block (orig 1876 action) in 45-90, 32" Badger barrel, sporting a rear Buckhorn flip up sight, front silver blade sight.  It weighs is 11.5 pounds

Although quite a bit of my hunting is on foot in the woods of north western Montana.  The easy swing of the 1895GS would be great as well.  It will be a toss up when I get to the time to make my purchase.  Dang if I won the lottery, I'd buy both for sure  :-D

You will love the 95 Cowboy its like a dream come true, I also have two 95 GGs, one stainless and one Blue and one goes with me every where i go. I made a mistake and let  my 35 Rem. get away from me and now i'm hunting another to take its place.

Well, by golly, Montanan......

I never would'a thunk it! Only one pound difference between the two, eh?

Yep, that's a right fine rolling block you got there, pardner.  I'd keep me satisfied, for sure!

Hey Hog

I think I just found the place I been missin for some time The Place I forgot about that I just couldn't remember.... been there before.  I know you recognize it... ya get out away from town and you got space    no trees it seems.

My kind of town/city.... I used to drive long hauls many years ago.... brought several loads in by flatbed.

But getting back to the Roller.... yep you load this up with a black powder load, and thunder rolls.  I use anything from a 300-gr cast bullet to a 550-gr depending on how far I'm shooting it.  The farther out you want to shoot, the heavier weight bullet you use.

Depending on the design of the bullet, when you hit your game, it reports back with an authorative WHACK

I'm hoping to get a bead on a nice mule deer buck here in a couple of weeks.  Will be hunting off the highline in Montana just east of Shelby.

Hey Montanan! Here's my latest shooter Marlin! Picked it up last Sunday at our local gun show. It's a model 1881 Marlin, with double set triggers, in .40-60 Marlin, (same as .40-65 Win.) All standard configuration other than the triggers. It's got a great bore, but somone slopped some cold blue on the receiver, so I had to clean that off. Otherwise I'm ready to take it to the range and try it out!

I have a lever action Marlin made in 1985 that was rebarreled to 40-65 win.  Just used it this weekend on an early whitetail rifle hunt.  Wanted to get a deer with something different than my trusty 30-06.  I shot 2 doe at 40 yards, one heart and one lung.  Both ran a short distance and dropped within sight.  Nice big 40 caliber hole in and out.  Yesterday I shot the biggest buck so far in the front of the shoulder at 30 yards.  He ran 60 yards before plowing his nose/rack into the dirt and doing a summersault.  Measured 16.5 inside and 23" outside with a large drop tine.  Counted 17 points as well.  Very old deer and my neighbor has a cam tracker photo of him from a few months ago as well.  Anyway I am real impressed with the 40-65 cartridge.   I don't think there are any modern guns chambered for it now.

North of Madison in the CWD Herd Reduction Zone.  There was a 4 day hunt the 27 to 30th.  Another brillint DNR idea.  Sure screws up Bow hunting, but I can't complain this year.  Wish I had photo's back to post.  Really is a monster.

marlinman93 - I'm droolin droolin droolin over that original 81 there.  For the guy's that don't know what this cartridge looks like.  and the cartridge is available thru Cheaper than Dirt

IMR Reloading Guide for the 40-65

Accurate Arms in PDF for the 40-65

You can get the loaded ammo thru Buffalo Arms loaded 40-65 ammo

Or you can purchase fresh empties from Starline Brass for $127.00 for 250 cartridges empties that are new.  Also by the looks of the old original brass they can be resized/formed by running 45-70 brass up thru 40-65 sizing dies.

I'm still droolin droolin droolin over that "original 81"

Awesome find there.

I bought my Marlin with scope loading dies and several hundred jacketed bullets.  I found 42 grains of IMR3031 to be very accurate and apparently very deadly on big whitetail.  I found the bullet while processing last night.  Went into the shoulder at the base of the neck, shattered the shoulder bones, through the chest cavity and was laying right next to the hide under a layer of fat perfectly mushroomed.  265 grain flat nose jacketed soft point ended up weighing 176 grains.  Can't complain about the performance of the 40-65 Winchester.  I'm getting very tight groups at both 50 and 100 yards, but not tried farther shots with the rifle as yet.   Thanks for the loading info, I have not been able to find alot about the cartridge on the net.  Takes some looking.

Howdy Pards
I just got my Marlin back it is now a 40-65.
I am using  265gr. smokeless and 300 gr. for blackpowder.
The 300gr. bullet don't run out of lube shot 20shots into 3" at 100yds and that is with open iron sights.
Now I have to wait for the deer season to open up.

Dusty Ed,
I'm excited to see others are enjoying this cartridge as well.  I only bought the rifle because it was something different and seemed like something I had to have.  I was very impressed on the performance on the 3 whitetail deer I shot last weekend.   Out of curiosity, why did you have a rifle changed to 40-65?

Have a .450, .357.  Next Marlin, a 32-20.  Just for the nostalgia.  My grandad hunted with that caliber.
