What kind of wood for a mortar bed?
« on: November 30, 2005, 09:04:02 AM »
It looks as if I am going to aquire a mortar barrel  , And build the bed myself. SO, What kind of wood is traditional, what kind is best, and what kind is affordable?

Also: can someone tell me the purpose of a "garrison carriage"? it looks far to light withstand the recoil of fireing a 24 pounder!

"Correct" for a federal pattern is white oak.
"Correct" for a Confederate pattern is southern pine.

Federal patterns are painted.  So any good hardwood should work.  You want strength density and weight.

Confederate patterns were coated with boiled linseed oil.

I believe the English patterns-Revolutionary War patterns will milk red.

Not familiar with a "garrison carriage".  Seems to me a garrison carriage could be/ would heavier than a field carriage.
