Nosler B.T. vs. partition
« on: May 08, 2003, 04:33:34 AM »
Any person experience or opinions on using a .95 grain Nosler Ballistic tipped bullet verses a 100 grain partition bullet for a .243 that will be used for eastern whietails?  Shots will be around 100 yards.

Thanks!

Buckeye, I am no expert, but my opinion is if you are using a 6mm bullet for deer sized then you would be well off to choose something like the Partition or any other similar bullet that will stay together and penetrate.  To me the BS seems a little on the fragile side in the smaller calibers.

I've found the Nosler BT bullet a little too fragile for my liking-- especially when you don't get the perfect shot. The Nosler Parttiton has done a fantastic job of putting the deer down with both fast expansion and deep penetration. I like bullets to pass all the way thru and increase the chances for a good blood trail. Partitions do this more often than BTs.

Use the partition for the whitetails.  More peneration and good expansion.  You can shoot a shoulder and not worry it will get to the vitals.

I've seen a lot of deer killed quick with a 243 using spitzers and ballistic tips.  Never saw any killed with Partitians.  Don't get me wrong about Partitions I would agree that  they are probably the correct choice.  It is just that around here most guys are not into bullet specifics.  They go to the store and buy Winchester ballistic tips etc... because that is what the stores sell. . . they never even heard about a Partition.  Before the last year or so  I was just like them.  But with reading forums on this excellent site and now getting into reloading I can see that bullet type is very important.  But you know, the guys up here that shoot 243's are still going to shoot what the stores sell.  And they will keep killing deer quick.

I vote for the Partitions, too.  That's what I use in my .243 and .25-05.  In a less-than-perfect shot, the "regular" spitzers will kill, but a Partition will leave you with more venison steaks than burger  :-)

Use the Partition, it will never fail you.  I'm a huge fan of BT's in my .30-06 and .308 for whitetails, hands down the best bullet going for that size critter, but the it's a little too fragile in the 6mm, and I'm not speaking from the sidelines, my mother uses a .243 for deer and we've had some problems with BT's blowing up on shots that aren't quite perfect, but the Partition will literally run a deer from one end to the other and beyond at 100 yds. and expnd very nicely.

I am actually going to be reloading for my friend who has had marginal success with Factory loaded 100 grain Remington Core Lokt bullet.  Do you think partitians would do better tan the core lokt?

The Partiton will hold together better than the Core-Lokt bullet- -at least the rear 1/2 will. The bullet may expand and shed the front half of the core and tear things up pretty well and then the back half continues to penetrate very deeply. A deer I shot head on last fall had its chest organs totally destroyed and the bullet exited in front of the rear hip. This was with a 130 gr. .270 Winchester load.  You might also find the Partitions are also superbly accurate these days-- somewhat unlike their earlier reputation a couple decades ago. Rich P

I have never had any success with the core-lokt's.  I never shot at anything with them because The groups always were around 3" @ 100. Pretty bad from a gun that would shoot 1/2" or less with it's favorite loads.
The people I know who have used them all say they are too hard and don't want to expand.  I'd take the Partitions any day.

Nosler Partition = one of the greats!!

Buckeye Hunter,

The BT Nosler is great for some applications and groups very well, but until you get into the .338s it is not able to take very much abuse and hold up.

On the other hand, the Nosler Partition in the .243 will take everything you can dish out!

Expect it to expand back to the partition, and maybe even loose most everything ahead of the partition but the rest of the bullet will just keep doing what it was sent for.

I first used the partition in the 243 over 30years ago, back when you could see and feel the machine marks on the sides of the bullet. I started using the partition because another bullet came apart (shed the jacket) on my first mule deet buck taken with my handloads.

Since that time, I have more often then not used a partition of some size, depending on the caliber I was shooting. And, I have seen them do their job and not distroy a lot of meat when the same hit with a typical bullet would have left the makings for a lot of mince meat.

Most/many of the bullets are better now (including the brand that came apart) then they used to be, and there are a number of very good bullets of which the Nosler Partition is one!! The machinics, way of making, the partition is different then it was 30 - 40 years ago, but you can depend on it to do what you send it to do, providing the shooter does their part AND the cal. is up to the task.

And yes, it is better then the Rem. corelok!!
