Parking along state forest lands
« on: November 28, 2005, 04:03:54 AM »
Hi:

Can someone tell me what the regulations are when it comes to parking along the road next to NYS forestlands?  I wanted to hunt in the Bush Hill State Forest today, but every road along the state forest had signs up stating NO PARKING  from November 1st Till April 1st. All the access roads leading into the forests had the gates open but the snow was plowed into the entrances making the roads impassable.  So, how do you hunt on State Forest land when there is no place to park your vehicle??

Were the roads Town or County roads..or state roads?

Local municipalities will generally prohibit parking during those months because of snow removal, but for specific times during the day.  You may want to double check the signs to see if they have time restrictions.  Otherwise, call the municipality that controls the road and ask them, make sure you get the name of the person you are talking to!

If you are parking off a State road there should not be a problem, as long as your wheels are not on any part of the driveable section of the roadway.

I would also contact your local DEC office to see about parking around the area you plan to hunt.  They may be able to steer you in the right direction.

In my neck of the woods when you see a sign like that - Road Closed from Nov 1 to April 1, or some such, it means it is a seasonal road and they do not maintain the road (plow or otherwise) during the period specified.  They (local municipalities) probably plow up an embankment to keep people out so they won't have to try and go in after them if they get stuck or go off the road.

My own road becomes 'seasonal' just down a bit.  Once in November we had 3 local police cars, two tow trucks and a pickup all off the road - seems it snowed, then melted but froze up just enough to make the entire downslop pure ice.  It was an incredible scene, it was also a major piece of work trying to get all of those vehicles out of there.  Mikey.
