45-70 Got Bloodied Today.
« on: November 28, 2005, 03:37:29 AM »
First day of firearm combined antlered/antlerless season here in PA.

I got this gun from a guy bringing it in to a gunshop wanting to send it back because of a shipping boo-boo on the crown.  He decided it wasn't worth the hassle and sold it to me for $150 back in Aug..   I was originally in there to order a 30-30 Handi, then ended up having to order and lay it away. lol

...anyways.

I got this 8 point at about 11:15am, thought I saw it earlier but didn't have time enuff to count the points to make sure it was legal before it moved out of sight(max visual range of 20-70ft in this thicket).  I stalked it a ways til I came out where my uncle got a 6 point about an hour earlier-didn't see it..   So I circled around the massive pine thicket and came in on the back side.  I got about 500ft into the thicket and off to my left, coming from behind me, a HUGE doe followed by the buck in the pic below passed me up within 50ft.  The buck stopped for a few seconds while the doe kept going.  I counted off 3 points on one side, looked for the ribs right behind the right front leg and BANG!  It went about 30ft and layed down in a thorn patch in a very small "clearing".

I might go back out tomorrow for that doe.  She was carrying lots of meat, probably was 20lbs bigger then this buck(which wasn't light). lol

congratulations,

Thanks guys!

I didn't get a thing last couple years, so getting this makes me feel much better now.

I used Winchester's 300gr JHP on him, cut right straight through him.  I love Win.'s load with this rifle, slugs go right where you want them like a homing missile.

My uncle used his 300 Win Mag(Rem 700 or Colt Sauer rifle) on the 6 point he got.   ...probably 125yrd shot.    He sits in his tree stand over looking our fields near the pine thicket I brush hunt from.  I like to stalk them, thus pushing some out for him since he cant walk all that far due to Vietnam injury to hip.

slayer,

Greene County, west of Waynesburg has some nice monsters.  My company used to have 7 small cable tv systems down there, I would see some very nice bucks that would be legal.  Especially in the Graysville/Aleppo area near Ryerson Station Park.

Only about 60mile drive from P-Burg if you're scouting more hunting lands..
