Author Topic: What's best for hunting TN Hogs? (Read 671 times)

I have recently purchased a DW 44 Mag with 8" (and 4") barrel. I want to try Hog hunting for the first time. I have heard good things about the .310 Garrett Hammerhead but that is pretty expensive ($70 for 50). It will also beat the tar out of me when I am sighting in and practicing. I also don't have the time to reload (19 month old boy).

So with that said, what do you guys think would be a good choice for going after the hogs. Most of the guides say it will be a close shot (under 50 yards) and in thick brush. I also know that you need something pretty heavy to penetrate the flesh. So what do you guys think? We have bass Pro around here otherwise, I will just order online. If you know of a good deal, let me know.

If you don't reload the Federal 300 gr. hard cast bullets work well on hogs. I took one several years ago with one shot from my 44 Mag with them.

What REDHAWK1 said and don't for get BUFFALO BORE! -- just as good as GERRETT but a whole....lot less $$$$$

Got a recommendation of their loads? They have 5 different choices. Items 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D and 4E. Have any personal experience using them? Looks like the prices are more in line with premium ammo. Garret gets good reviews (as does buffalo bore) but is out of my budget.

I also saw the federal stuff that was recommended. It looks good too. Both Price and Performance. I can also get it directly from Bass Pro. At least this gives me some proven ammo choices that I can afford right now.

If anyone has any others, let me know.

The buffalo bore ammo is very hot and uses excellent hard cast bullets. I reload 300gr hardcasts for my super redhawk, but didn't have time to reload for an upcoming pig hunt where my wife will be using my TC in .357 mag to take small, under 80lbs meat hogs. I baught the 180gr buffalo bore .357 mags and can say they are by far the hottest .357s that I have ever shot. I am sure the .44 are loaded very hot too and should give you plenty of knock down.

If you do get time to reload, A good load I have found in the 44 mag is the 300grain LBT hard cast in front of 21.5 grains of 296. They are very accurate and not that bad to shoot. I can shoot it off the bench for several rounds, but some of my less experienced friends hand the gun back to me after 1 or two rounds. Luckily I have a 240 gr bullet load with blue dot that is much more comfortable and has almost identical point of impact for practice and smaller game.

stick with the heavier hard cast bullets. i made the mistake of trying to use my deer loads (240gr XTP bullets) on a really big feral hog (almost 550 lbs). got him but had to use four rounds. they just wouldn't get through the shield of fat. i'm glad it was a dog hunt and they kept him busy.
