update on .357 and an unexpected turn
« on: November 17, 2005, 11:20:07 AM »
Well I went and picked up the .357 rossi today. Has a decent trigger, excellent riflings, and a beautiful stock, I mounted a semi-cheap scope on it to see how it groups before I sink money into good optics. On the way home I stopped by dicks sporting goods to see what they had in. They are carrying special model rossis, one is a full bull 17 hmr in stainless with natural wood, and a triple play 20 ga .22 .243 youth in blued with synthetic. They also had standard package deals in .243 and a .223 heavy barrel package. amidst them all I spied a nice .308 package. I tried to leave without it but it followed me home  . It came with a cheap simmonds 3-9x32 scope a base and a hammer spur, and also a hardcase. It has beautiful wood, balances great, has a good trigger and looks a sight better than it does in the pictures. I came home and yanked off the simmonds and stuck a good bushnell 3-9x40 banner on it in better rings and stuck the simmonds on a Co2 air rifle. I'm gonna go shoot the rossis , can't wait....

talk to yall later

Cool :agree:  An eventful day to be sure
I guess you can fill us in then on your 308 thread too :)
Hope they shoot well for you, I doubt you will be disappionted.
So now that you have them, what kind of factory ammo are you going to start with?
Any Pics for us???

well, I shot them today and I was impressed. In the .357 I shot remington 158 grn SJHP and winchester white box 130 grn FMJ. It shot both to the same POA  and shot both through a ragged hole at 25 yards  (about the farthest I can shoot at this location). I shot remington 150 grn PSP core lockts out of the .308, it too shot all through a ragged hole at 25 yards. I sighted it in 2" high at 25 so it should be dead on around 100. I has 3 misfires with the .308 but I believe it was due to smmo. Trigger pulls are pretty good, however the .357 may be recieving a trigger job. The .357 will also get the barrel shortened to 18 1/2" for a pack gun, like my .44 mag, only difference will be  a choice in optics, I believe  i'll be using a red dot on this one. A little suprise that I was not expecting was my .357 and my buddies .357 (both were from the same place) are consecutive serl. numbers.
No pics yet, as i'm having trouble with my scanner and camera. I should have pics up by the time I have my .357 set up the way I want.

when i sighted in my .243 i was 2" high at 25 and it translated to like 7" high at 100. at 25 yards a high-powered rifle bullet is still climbing, so you should be about an inch LOW or so.

try it and see if i am right...that's what mine did.

I have found just about any center fire rifle sighted at 25yds needs to be resighted at 100yds. When you sight at 25 yds you don't really know if the bullet is still rising or falling at that short of distance. Also most scopes unless noted have parallax problems at close range. Just to be on the safe side all rifles should be checked again at 100yds just to be sure. You can't believe all the things you read in hunting rags or ballistic calculaters. :D
