Bolt trouble on an m77 mkII
« on: December 04, 2005, 03:02:34 PM »
Got my wife an m77 compact in 7-08.  She and my two nephews killed cow elk with it this year.  First elk for all of them.  The bolt seems to be developing an issue.  I don't remember this being a problem when we first got the riffle.  I fired a couple hundred rounds through it developing hunting loads and letting them all do some practicing.  Anyway, as you force the bolt forward from full extraction it binds up badly.  Any offcenter push on the bolt and you can't push forward.  The bolt seems very sloppy when fully opened.  Also, if you try to load 4 + 1 in the chanber.  The bolt is very tight to close.  This is my first ruger centerfire.  Is this normal?  The rifle shoots quite well for a shorty and I love to shoot it, but this seems like it needs to go back home to Ruger for a look see.  Anyone else notice these problems?

I have never heard of this before.  Maybe you just got a lemon.  If you can't find out what the problem is, Ruger will be gald to fix it for you, as they have a reputation for great customer service.

Ruger actions tend to be a little rough out of the box, but break in nicely in a short while. Other than that, they're great actions.

The problem you're having is not normal. I'd call Ruger about it.

Thanks guys.  I doubt that the action is not broken in.  Seems to be getting worse.  I have fired about 200 rounds through the rifle.  If it isn't broken in by now I doubt it will be.
