Savage 110 failure to fire

My son has a Savage 110 270 left hand rifle that has been a gem for several years but  Thursday he had a FTF not once but 3 times. I looked at the fired case and it had a dempled primer, which I see as a weak firing pin spring or crud in the bolt. The rifle does sit for long periods of time and sometimes with the spring under tension could this be a part of the problem? I looked on savage's web site and they give no instructions on bolt disassembly anyone know a site with instructions and diagram? Any help greatly appreciated. By the way he did get the deer but said the clicks played hell with his trigger squeeze. Thanks rugerman

It's likely dirt as I've never had a modern made mainspring go bad.. I'll include a link to a diagram. The process is fairly simple.

Be certain to decock the striker before starting disassembly..

Here's a good article.......it's a Savage 10, (short action) but I'm pretty sure the bolts are built on the same design......

Sometimes people oil too much and if the weather is cold enough....it will slow the firing pin enough to cause a failure to fire.......or hard primers...or too much head space.......or...........

Thanks for the replies. I think I have figured it out, When I asked him if the bolt handle was turned all the way down he wasn't sure so I pulled the bullets from the 2 rounds that didn't fire dumped the powder and tried them in his gun, both fired. Now I just have to get some time to try some more ammo and see if I can get a failure to fire with the bolt all the way down. Until then he'll be using my 7mm mag #1. Thanks again. rugerman

Had a similar problem in a Savage 10GLX left handed .308, turned out to be a head-space issue.  Had the smith correct it and never a concern since.
