Just catching up on some reading here guys... I haven't posted over here in a while, but check in often.. I don't have usually have much to talk about until the season get started.

Our gun opener here in SC was 9/15 and I missed a large 6 pointer on 9/16 w/ my 45-70..

I was then gone for essentially 2 weeks before getting back into it..

Seems that I've made up for lost time since though..lol
I've been able kill 3 does and a 7 pt for a total of 4 so far.

All were taken w/ my new Rem. 700 VS in 22-250 w/ a Bushnell 6-18x50.

Good luck to you guys as your openers should be right around the corner..

Congratulations on a season to remember! Er..., just how many deer is one allowed to take in South Carolina using a rifle?

It will vary for the different game zones...

some have unlimited buck harvest, the rest have 5 buck limit.

does can be taken by 3 methods...
- large properties can be in a state quota program that allots so many tags per acre depending on surrounding deer density..  The farm I hunt a portion of is 1500 acres and we get 50 doe tags.  One person could shoot all the tags or 50 folks could shoot 1 a piece.. The tags aren't assigned to individuals.

- Individuals not in a quota program can buy up to 4 doe tags @ $5 a piece. (assigned only to them)

- State allots a number of weekends that are either sex weekends.

Properties in the quota program cannot use personal tags or either sex days.

I know of some folks on large farms that may kill 20 a season.  The most I've ever killed in a season is 11... Typical season would be 6 or 7 for me.

Season runs for my area:  8/15 bow, 9/1 gun, doe tags are valid after 9/15, season closes on 1/1.....

You are one lucky son of a gun!  Here in Idaho, you can buy one over the counter tag for $20.  If you are lucky you can get drawn for a doe tag, another $20 bucks if drawn plus a $6? application fee.  Also, if you really, really want to shoot another deer, some units allow residents to buy unused non-resident tags, but at the non-resident price $235? I think.  I personally know of no one who goes to that expense and trouble for three deer.  I just read last night in an Outdoor life that Idaho's average 5 year deer harvest is 36,500 with a 25% success rate.  Anyone else want to share there states deer hunting prices and tag quotas?

Resident combination hunting, fishing, big game and wildlife management area license is $50

This license lets you do everything but turkey hunt and duck hunt.. Tags for turkey are free, but you have to get them, ducks stamps run about another $25..

Quota tags (doe) are pretty cheap.. I think ours works out to $4 a member.

Individual tags are $5 a piece up to 4..

Pretty much, residents can hunt everything in SC that has a season for way less than $200

Did I read that wrong.......tell me again...MODERN firearm.....no Muzzie...how long is the modern firearm season in South Carolina....and , what does the South Carolina Dept of Conservation , or Fish and Wildlife Unit estimate the deer population to be in S Carolina..   The reason I ask , is that here in Missouri.....our modern centerfire season is a whopping 11 days...only 4 of those are weekend days.......so I am green with envy thinking of a longer period......I hunt deer in Texas as well, where the rifle season comes in around the 18th of November...and winds up Jan 19th ....so they get 2 months.....I get 11 days......kinda sucks...so any time I can, I love to send the Missouri Dept of Conserv..an e mail telling them we need a longer season....

I have emailed our state biologist to get the herd #..

Some game zones do have a ML season.. Those areas bow starts 9/15, ML 10/1 and regular gun 10/15  season ends 1/1

The most liberal zones in state have a 8/15 opener for all weapons.  no special bow or ML..

My area starts w/ bow 0n 8/15, regular gun starting 9/1 running all the way through 1/1..

So according to where you are in the state, you can hunt up 4.5 months for deer...

I know that this is way over due, sorry...

I changed jobs a few months ago and have been in the thick of it since then.

The herd as of last year is in the 800,000 range for the state. we had a peak of around 1,000,000 in the mid 90's and we have slowly evened back out to the 800k level..
