Attn.: Redhawk1.....375 H&H recoil reducer
« on: November 29, 2005, 03:26:54 PM »
Evening Redhawk,

Well, I finally fitted the recoil reducer to the Thompson Center Encore synthetic stock.  I gave it some serious thought and I'll try to explain what I did.  If you send me your email address, I'll send some photos that may better explain, but here goes...

I went to the local hardware store and purchased a 6", 1/4x20 stove bolt (the type with the rounded head), a small piece of 1/8"x1-1/2" flat steel, and a 1/4x20 nut.  I welded the head of the bolt at a 90 degree angle in the center of the flat steel (kinda made it look like a "T".  The Sims LimbSaver pad has a raised/bordered section on the inside part of the pad.  I cut and grinded the flat steel to where it fit just about perfectly inside the bordered section and super glued it in place.  This basically makes the pad, steel, and bolt one unit.

I then screwed the nut and recoil reducer onto the end of the bolt.  The nut is simply a lock nut so that I can adjust the recoil reducer to the exact position in the stock.  I then placed the entire unit into the stock and adjusted it so that there was no movement back/forth or side-to-side.  This holds the recoil reducer in place, but also allows quick removal should the need ever occur.  The only thing you can hear is the actual mercury in the reducer.  Can't wait to try it this weekend.

Also, have you ever tried Hodgdon's Varget powder?  Everything I've read seems to sound good.

Anyway, hope that explanation was clear enough to let you know.  Let me know what you think.

Karl

kgillard, sound like you found a way to make it work. Keep my informed on how it works. Also my E-mail address is Surfish7@aol.com.  :D

I have not tried the Varget powder.

The photos should be on the way to your email.  Let me know if they fail to arrive.  Thanks,
Karl

Hey Redhawk,
Did you get the photos?  If so, what do you think about the setup or could there be improvements that I haven't noticed?  Thanks,
Karl

I tried all 3 e-mails you sent, but none of them had pictures. All were incripted.

I can't paste the photos here...dunno why!  Anyway, you should receive three emails...one photo in each.  I went out to shoot today and there was a noticeable recoil-less feeling.  However, the old .375H&H still had its share of kicking.  If all else fails, I may try a muzzle brake.  Just so darn loud, but its like shooting a .243.  Let me know what you think about the setup.

kgillard,  Try to post the pictures as I think there are a few of us interested to see how it turned out and it may be too inconvenient to email pics. :-)

Well, I'm apparently not computer-literate enough to post the photos.  I have tried cut/paste, but it just won't let me.  They are jpeg format, but Redhawk was unable to open the files I sent him.  Any suggestions????[/img]

Hey Hobbyist,
Would love to post the photos, but haven't figured out how.  However, Redhawk was able to receive them via email.  If you would like, send your email and I'll forward them to you.
