Having trouble forming 375 jdj brass
« on: December 07, 2005, 07:22:25 AM »
Today I made my first attempt to form 375 jdj brass from 444 marlin brass. I have made 7x30s from 30-30s before without problems. I tried my usual steps, lubed with one-shot and mica in the neck but when I ran it through the sizing die, it just didnt want to go... at all. I put pretty good force on my press trying to make it size but I felt like if I pushed any harder the case was going to stick. What am I not doing right? These are hornady dies with good, clean brass on a rock chucker press. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, John

I don't know what the problem you're having could be caused from, but I've never had a problem sizing 375JDJ from 444 marlin brass when using the RCBS lube and lube pad. |

It may be that the spray on lube your using does not provide enough lubrication to reform this brass. I don't know.

I personally do not like One-Shot, I think it's junk.  Here's why:

A friend of mine had trouble with 50 Beowulf Brass, it kept hanging, he ruined several cases.  I gave him and almost empty bottle of Dillon Spray lube (Midway's is the same as far as I am concerned) and the problems went away.   I was not impressed with the Hornady One-Shot he had, despite the excellent reviews it has received.

But, I think for case forming, Imperial Sizing wax can't be beat, and that's what I use.  Don't use too much or case shoulder dents may occur.

I think the above posts just nailed your problem..I have a partial can of the stuff left and I am trying to find a good use for it..it worked on some cabinet hinges to get a squeek out...

When ever I size any large cases or re-form cases, I use the RCBS case lube and a pad. The spray on lube does not give you enough actual lubrication. I quit using the spray on lube.  :D

RCBS is what I use day to day but, when forming I use Imperial sizing wax.  It is to RCBS what RCBS is to One Shot.

sgtt, I use imperial wax also, but when I reloaded the 500 mag, it let's the case stick in the die. I had to use the RCBS lube on a pad to prevent it.

I also used the RCBS lube and pad and had no trouble forming 100 rounds.  One other thing that I read and did was used a .44 REM MAG Expander 'bell' die to round out the case mouth before sizing.  This greatly helped.

I use RCBS case lube and pad as well and have never had any troubles with it, I also use the lee stuff and works almost as well just a lot slower to use.
When i form my 375 JDJ brass I use several strokes go in a little back it out turn the case a little and push it in more  and so on untill it is formed.

I'm going to echo the RCBS case lube posts.  The .375JDJ is one of the easiet cases to form provided you have adequate lubrication.  Heck, I've yet to trim any of the case mouths on mine.

See, all the different opinions, all great ideas, all work.  Just need to find the one that works for you.   If you don't trust what you are using, it wont work.

My RCBS pad has been sitting idle for .......15 years or more I guess.
Size up 500 6tcu brass over the weekend, but there its necking up.  Lots easier then necking down.

I have the dillon spray lube, a recipe of my own with Lanolin, and imperial sizing die wax.  I go thru a lot of the die wax.  A LOT!!

I am going to assume you are using new 444 brass.  Did you debur them?  When forming 30 Bower Alaskan, 7 Super mag, and other cases where they are being necked down, I find deburing the cases, spraying with the Dillon Lube (let the alcohol evaporate), and keeping my thumb and index finger lubed with imperial sizing die wax works best for me.

I use an RCBS single stage press, use my left thumb and forefinger to pick up the brass in the neck area and place in shell holder, and pull the ram handle with right handle.  The imperial sizing die wax added to the dillon lube in the neck forming area works really well and does not dimple the shoulders.

Another way that works.
