My first whitetail
« on: November 21, 2005, 06:56:53 AM »
Last Saturday I got my first whitetail. I was there to hunt hogs, but since the woods are full of acorns and the hogs are staying deep the landowner said we could take bucks but no does. I got a nice little six point. Not a trophy whopper, but it will be tasty.

Congrats,   .  Now you need to watch out for Buck fever, it is very contagious.

Hey, way to go.  I would love to go hog hunting but taking your 1st buck had to be a thrill.  I remember back in 1980 when I took my first buck . . . Oh well, guess we don't need to go there.  But congratulations.

Thanks guys. It was a thrill. My heart was thumping so hard I was sure he would hear it and bolt.

It was a bigger thrill because my wife had accompanied me (her first time on any kind of hunt). I was very proud of her. She was real still and quiet and didn't yell "run Bambi run".  :-) She helped me track it. Fortunately for me it was a heart shot and left a very easy to follow blood trail.

:D  :D Congratulations.  I am seeing lots of doe, but few bucks now.  We should be in the rut in this part of Texas, but the bucks are not chasing doe on my place.  I saw one very large (looked like the Hartford Insurance buck) buck Sunday morning, only problem, he was across the fence.  For some reason my gun just will not shoot across barbed wire............ :(  :(

Got another buck. This time in west Texas. Tougher hunting and longer shots, but it was even more thrilling. Saw a lot of does and four bucks over the four days. No chance on the first buck, but on the last day of the hunt I got this buck.

The reported temerature was 17.6 degrees, but once I spotted three bucks and several does I forgot about being cold. My ear drums were throbbing my heart was beating so fast. The largest buck went back into the woods before legal shooting time. This was the best of the remaining two.

JKump, too late I think I got the fever.
