.338 Rum experience ?
« on: December 01, 2005, 02:05:07 PM »
I just got a browning Abolt in 338 RUM.  I couldn't pass up the price so I picked it up.  It should make a good long range alaskan rifle.  I was thinking of starting to load the 210 or 225gr barnes TSX bullets.  Does anybody have any good rum experience.  I'd love to hear your input on it.

Well I took mine bear hunting shot a couple black bears couldn't  find them. So I'm going back this summer. I will kill one this time a big one.

I was shooting the 250gr bullet down loaded to 2730fps. My rifle has a brake that comes off and I had made, a thread screw on cover to protect the threads while hunting. I had it sighted in to 100yds. Right now it at a gunsmith friend of mine. I'm getting the action bedded. There is nothing wrong with it, I just wanted to have this done so I can drive tacks. :D

WHat do you think was the problem with recovering those bears?  Do you think the bullet was blowing up due to the faster velosities?

bear,

I have a M700 LSS in 338 RUM with a Leupold VXIII 2.5x8 scope.
I have developed loads with 200 br BT, 210 gr PT, 225 gr PT/AB, and 250 gr PT Nosler bullets and all shoot .5 MOA at 100 yds.
I have used the 210 gr PT to take ELk, Mule Deer, and Black Bear at ranges of 10 -350 yds. I have also used the 250 gr on WT Deer. All were 1 shot kills literally knocking the animal off its feet.
As for recoil, its there but not as bad as most people seem to think. I added a Pachmyer Decelerator recoil pad. No porting or brake is needed.
It can't be much different than your Marlin Guide Gun with the heavy loads.
The 338 RUM is a absolute hammer on game and should serve you well in Alaska.
If you have any questions or want some load data, let me know.

Regards,

JD338

I really don't know. After I had shot the next day I cheaked the rifle for accurate shooting and it was on the money. The rounds I was shooting were those Hornady RN 250 gr bullets. I didn't think it would leave a blood trail with all the fat on those bears. We searched those woods and couldn't find the bears. I figure maybe the round nicked a bone and glanced off without hitting the vitals. Lucky bears. :D

I finally got my RUM all set up.  It has limbsaver recoil pad, and a muzzle break to help cut down on recoil.  I have a Burris Euro black diamond 3-12x50 with ballistic plex.  It weighs in right at 8 1/2 pounds fully loaded.  Another guy that I know up here who shoots a 338 RUM turned me on to his favorite load of 225gr accubond with retumbo for 3150fps.  Accuracy is great and hopefully the accubond will hold up to the extra velosity.  Otherwise the 225gr barnes TSX is looking very promising.

I ordered my Remington 700 XCR, .338 RUM back in June.  After a few months of harassing Cabela's it finally showed up at the beginning of November.

I mounted my Burris Fullfield II 3-9x scope use Burris Double Dove Tail rings and corresponding base mounts.  I actually went as far as to email Burris, mentioned to them what I was mounted this scope to and they responding with their recommendations.

Over Thanksgiving we were at my grandparents farm in DE.  I was impatient to shoot it and get it sighted in so I used what I could find for a makeshift bench.  Three bales of straw and a piece of plywood.  I boresighted the gun first.  Then I set the target out at 50 yards.  I was consistantly hitting the top of the paper (about 5 inches high) and about 3 inches to the left.  I did my best to make the adjustments.  Shot another one and was pretty darn close, 2 inches high and right on target as far as left-right goes.  So I moved it out 100 yards and then that is where things got screwey.  I would say most of it was from no experience sighting in rifles and another good portion was the wobbling rest I was using.  I did have a gun vise to help keep it still but I couldn't get the bales to sit still in the wind.

I shot a whole box of Federal Vital Shok 180gr bullets that day.  $40. LOL!  I was out of bullets already. =D

I that following Saturday I went to Cabela's and bought another box and I also ordered a box from MidwayUSA.com.  I went up to the camp on Thursday evening, hunted with my 30.06 in the morning and then finished sighting in my .338RUM at lunch time.  Our range at the camp is about 75yards.  We have a table that is firm and solid so there was no wobbling.  So I dialed it in, hit the outer ring of the bullseye then had my dad shoot one and he put it dead center.

After shooting 23 rounds I have to say that it kicks slightly more than my 7600, 30.06 does without a recoil pad.  By the way, the XCR stock comes with a LimbSaver Recoil Pad, I'm sure it has to help keep it near comparable to the 30.06.

Also, the 700 XCR may have a barrel that is 3-4" longer than my 7600 but it's noticably lighter.

At this point, I really like this rifle.  It shoots smooth but you can still get a sense of it's awesome power.  I can't wait to do some more shooting this summer with it.  I want to sight it in for 200 yards (assuming I can find a range with that distance available.  If not, 100yards and I'll compensate.

Right now, I don't have the time or the money to do handloads.  However, I plan on eventually setting something up at my parents house where my dad has space and some equipment already (not sure what he has but he said he has some stuff).  So I will be buying a box or two of Federal Vital Shok whenever I get the chance just to keep a good stock of ammo.

P.S.  Some people (my dad, my uncle and I read some stuff here) recommended and almost insisted on a muzzle break.  I find that the kick is nothing to worry about.  I will be looking into having the trigger poundage reduced though, that is definite.

Also, I got a doe on Friday morning with my 30.06 and then when I carried my .338RUM I didn't see another deer the rest of the trip.

kx90,
At $40.00 per box, reloading will pay off rather quickly!
A reloading kit will cost you about $250.00 for all the basics.
Let me know when you are ready and I will be happy to help you with loads.

Will do, JD.  Thanks.

I'm looking at probably by the end of next summer to set something up.  I should be able to browse the site more often now so I'm going to try and read up as much as possible.
