I did read the FAQ on the twist rates of the handi barrels.(thank you)
What was missing is the twist rate of the .22-250.

Another twist to ponder is my .30-30 which was purchased new in 92, and it has (I repeat Has) a 1-12 twist, which I believe is better in the .308 bore.

As far as bottoming out your screw, I'm referring to the lug screw.
Purchase a too-long lug screw and grind it down so that it snugs the fore-end to the O-Ring when the screw is bottomed out. It should be the same pressure every time unless you change O-ring sizes. This eliminates the need for precise torque setting on the lug screw for the real anal Handi-shooters; However An aging O-ring or cold one might change the affects of the pressure on the lug over time. It is a good practice to change the O-ring with the same size one periodically.

I suppose this will sound like a dumb question mag41, but I try to get in at least one a day.

Where can I get the screws, thru NEF or is this a hardware store item? Sounds like a good trick. And yes I do fit in the 'anal' category. :eek:

Most hardware stores will have them.
I purchased a pack of 6 at Lowes. They only had SS in the type the NEF would need.

RV, sorry about the .22-250 twist rate, another one that we missed, it's in there now. ¼x20x½ is the standard screw size, that's been in the FAQ for a while.

How long was the replacement screw you bought? I know 3/4" isn't long enough to bottom out.

Paul, I know you asked Vance this question, but I thought I'd take a stab at it, if you don't mind? As close as I can measure without an O-ring in place it's gonna take at least .820-.830" of screw. I measured using both synthetic and wood forends and got the same measurement for both. So maybe try one 7/8" long if you don't use an O-ring, and if you're using a 3/32" thick O-ring like the one in the FAQ then go with one an inch long. That's what I plan to get unless someone corrects me, and that's been known to happen. :wink: It's gonna take some grinding either way you go. Take care.

I'm not using an "O" ring, but the shims I have would amount to the same thing. I'll see if I can find a 7/8". I snugged my .357 forearm down and backed off a little and the forearm seems to wiggle a little, which I don't like.

I don't have a picture of the modified screw, because it's on a "loaner gun" and my shed is too cold to grind another right now.
BTW Make sure you have a die to clean up the threads before you screw it in the lug.

A die isn't necessary when cutting/grinding a threaded bolt off, just run an approapriate nut on the bolt before you start workin on it, after you're done, smooth the cut edge with a file then run the nut off the bolt, it will clean it up great, it also gives you more surface to clamp the bolt in a vise while doing the cutting. Learned this trick bout 50yrs ago from my Grampa, bless his soul. :wink:

If you snug two appropriate sized nuts against each other on the machine screw you won't have the problem of the screw turning in the vice while trying to saw threw it. :wink:
