240gr XPTs at max speed for hunting

anyone shooting them with max loads?say 150gr charges of pyro pellets of 777 pellets or max loads of 777 loose powder for your deer hunting?

i once used them with my first Knight Rifle with the whimp loads i used then,80 or 90 grains of ff black powder and they shot with very good accuracy but i felt they just never opened up at those speeds.i killed a number of deer with them and the exit holes looked just like the entrance hole.because of that i got away from them and started shooting the 250 gr Barnes MZ Expanders.this year i started hunting with a 445 super mag Contender pistol and killed a buck with it.the bullet for this kill was a 240gr Remington JHP and i had total bullet blowup with than one.for the next kill with this Contender i loaded the Hornady 240gr XTP up to 1900fps and the exit hole looked much better than before with the slow muzzleloader loads i once used.the XTPs are one tough bullet to say the least and i am wondering alittle more about them?

how fast have you pushed them for hunting?

will they hold up over 2000FPS?

ever recovered a XTP bullet from a deer or other game?if so what did it look like?

im thinking of shooting them again out of my Knight Rifle for hunting with max loads if they shoot to my standard.there alot less $$$ than the buck a pop im paying for the Barnes Expanders.even less than the SSTs too and im thinking they will work just as good.

Funny you should ask about recovery... I just weighed an xtp that I recovered off a "quartering to" shot.  233grs. from a 240 gr bullet!!  97% weight retention!!  The two others I have recovered were 85 and 86%, so this one was quite a pleasant surprise.  All three were perfect mushrooms and knocked them real dead, real quick.  I love that bullet and would love those combo packs even more if they didn't keep changing the sabots (which necessitates working out a new load). I'm only shooting 80grs of FFF t7 out of an encore, so they arent even close to hot loads.  They do however make up for in accuracy what they give up in velocity.  Great bullet at a good price, good luck!!

shot the xtp 4 years now i had 3 bullets not exid deer from ft loaders,,,,firts was a 58 cal round ball recovered from the outside skin off rear ham.on a 90 yd cornerring shot...100# buck ran 50 yds....i could have shot it again it barley even made it out of round....other 2 were 240 xtps.both expaned very nicly.....deer no run......use 90 gr.pryo loose..usally leave a xxit hole the size of china........shot 200 gr xtp out of 445 sm.this year shot 136 # 10 pt. at 20 feet...yes feet...it was slightly above me <i hit it in the neck...no exit hole.....but it hit the spine and blew lead all over...but the copper was lodged in the spine where it was expanded.....i wouldnt shoot any thing but xtps ....jb

I love that XTP 300 bullet pushed by 85 grains of BM3 and I have taken several deer with it.
I was only able to recover 1 bullet as the rest have passed through the animals but as you will see it mushroomed nicely, This bullet went in at the flank (almost straight away) cut 2 ribs in line and went through the belly, through the heart, 1 lung , another rib, through the front shoulder blade (opposite side )and came to rest just inside the hide at the base of the neck. This animal was a very heavy deer well over 200lbs (no scale) but his size contributed to the bullet recovery as it was a lot to go through.

I have one that I recovered a few years ago!

It is a 240 grain XTP that now weighs 199 grains and measures .70 inches.
It is a perfect mushroom!  I found the bullet right next to the hide on the off-side!

The deer was hit broadside, in the middle of the ribs at about 140 yards!
I was using 2 Pyrodex 50 grain pellets in my 26 inch Encore!
