BC Questions
« on: December 01, 2005, 03:08:34 PM »
As a Handiholic, I've managed to restrain myself somewhat, only purchasing a .17HMR and .223 Ultra in the past year and a half. I've been curious about the .45-70, but have only handled the Handi version. I was at Sportsman's Warehouse today, and looked at the BC, and I'm amazed at how well balanced it is, considering the 32" barrel. The peep sight seemed easy to use; my eyes are getting older, and I don't mind the look of some of the BC's I've seen with scopes on them, but we'll see.

My question is this: Being a bit of a recoil wuss, is it easy to find a recoil pad that will fit the curved butt of the BC? I had trouble finding one for a Rem 700BDL, and finally went with a Limbsaver grind-to-fit, and the fit is marginal at best, but it does work. That rifle weighs barely 7# with a scope, and the BC's metal butt plate was painful just to look at!

The H&R .45-70 seem to have very good accuracy from what I've read, and I'm not sure I'll be able to hold off much longer. I was going to save for a .375H&H (one of my dream rifles), but at $299 for the BC, I'm not sure what I'll do!

You can cut the butt off square and add the recoil pad of your choice, or you can use a Galco leather slip-on, not as good as a Limbsaver, but looks nice and retains the original stock.

howdy ya fellow arizonian,

for someone thats a lil shy of recoil your shore got some funny dream rifles :) .

if it was me to kinda keep with the traditional look of the rifle i'd go to a saddle shop and get em' to make me a leather recoil pad with rawhide lacing(put on wet so it tighten up) or have em' build one to cover one them ugly lookin' recoil pads they sell at the mart i got one made by limbsaver on my handi it isnt too ugly but we do have few saddle shops round here so ill just leave it there for a few days see if they can build me one that covers that one up so it dont look too bad.

That Galco is very nice looking, and I was really interested until I saw that it cost $49.99. It must be a very nice peice for that much. They also have over the shoulder straps that go onto your shoulder with a strap. Had one years ago and lost it :( I don`t mind the recoil of my B/C, but I haven`t tried Buffalo Bore or +P`s in it yet, the strongest being Rem Core Lock, so only up to medium so far. I don`t think I nead any stronger, it is just for Whitetails up to 100 yards, but I would want the very hot ones if I was hunting Elk and Grizzly or even Moose, don`t want to chase them too far ya know :) Jack.

Try taking butt plate off and filling with # 7 1/2 or #8 shot, adds about a 1 lb. Or try lighter loads , such as Unique and lead bullets.

Here is another option, get the BC and replace the buttstock with a H&R TDC checkered american black walnut buttstock with a recoil pad. It matches the forearm exactly and will help take away the sting from the 45-70. Those H&R walnut buttstocks are pricy but you might manage to find someone here willing to trade a new BC buttstock for a new TDC buttstock. They cost just about the same. As a matter of fact I may be willing to make the swap if and when you get a BC. I have a new checkered walnut TDC buttstock sitting here!!!  Contact me if your interested. Maybe I can help you out....<><....

That is a good-looking stock. I didn't see the TDC stock on H&R's Web site...? My favorite stock for the Handis is the Cinnamon laminate; looks great on my .223 Ultra.

bulldurham -- I do have some interesting dream rifles, considering what I posted. But it's also the challenge to overcome it that has me interested. I enjoy shooting, as a skill to improve and a way to overcome perceived limitations.

Thanks for the input!

What I did was go with the LimbSaver small slip on and covered it with a lace on sling. Works fine for me.

Another option is to leave the gun alone and buy a PAST shoulder pad and wear it under your shirt so your friends don't see it 8) It will tame the recoil tremendously and then you hand the rifle to them to shoot and it kicks them so hard they will then think you are Superman :) Not that I'd do that  but I will vouch for the PAST pad for the BC even after rechambering it to 45-120

That`s it!! PAST shoulder pad. I can`t find mine to save my life :( If I can`t find it, I will buy the Small slip on pad for the range. Thanks-Jack.
