Synthetic Flints

I remeber a while back i use to see Synthetic Flints for sale. I think they were all black and guys said they sparked like mad, but ate up frizzens. Do they still sell these? I can replace frizzens :grin: Thanks-Jack.

They were called DuraFlints, and I think they're out of business.

I do have a question, and it's not a loaded question, but a legitimate one that I had to decide on myself when I got into Flintlocks.

If the decision is made to undertake the challenge of a Flintlock rifle.....the most notable aspect of which is the flint ignition system itself.....I asked myself why would I want to turn around an use a modern synthetic substitute flint...seemed like it would be sidestepping the whole point and I might as well stay with a caplock.

So I settled on black English flints and am 100% glad that I did...buy them in bulk bags of 50 or 100 from October Country to get the cheapest price...and not only are they the best flints available, "they're the real deal"...they're what the settlers used to hunt, defend themselves, settle this country, etc.

With a modern substitute duraflint, I really wouldn't feel honest about going around telling people I filled all my deer tags with a Flintlock, because it really wouldn't be what people would think I had used.

I feel much the same as round ball on this . However I think we should point out cut agates like the one sold by TC ,traditions and a couple others  are not dura flints .  While the are agate  they are not flint and can also eat up a frizzen .
  I myself had until recently , when discussing a original  German rifle on the TMA forum. Had always associated cut agates or cut flints to ones of modern manufacturing . Well apparently I was wrong in that as  they seem to  date way back on the other side of the pond .

 That being said I to used English flints  but have been ordering them from TOW.
 Round ball if you don’t mind my asking what are you paying for ¾ flints ? Tow has taken a jump in price . While I don’t mind paying it  at the current cost im going to have to be much more picky about  how I hand them out to fellas

I've always found October Country to have the best prices...now that they've sold out to another owner I don't know if that'll change or not.

Bulk bags of 50 or 100 were just under a dollar.....plus, I took part in a huge special purchase hosted by a ML website one time where I bought 300 3/4" Tom Fuller flints for $.69/each...and Tom Fuller flints are simply outstanding as you probably know.

Those are the kind of deals that ML forums can cut with their advertisers...announce it, solicited orders and prepayments for a couple weeks, and process the order.

Minimum bulk bags of 50 as they's how they arrive packaged from Tom Fuller's company, so there is no labor on the part of the ML advertisier...they just have to drop your bags into a shipping carton and send it to you.

I wish a couple of the boards that I know you and I belong to would take the inititative and get something like that going for it's members...

I respect your views fellas :grin: I use German Cut Agate Flints and I really love them, they are hard and throw a nice spark. The English flints I had, didn`t work very well, maybe it was just the brand,I should try some real English flints? Yes, I remember now, Dura Flints. Out of business eh, ah man, I would have tried them. The Flint type is the least of the originality i ever look at, I just want durability and alot of spark. Thanks guys-Jack.
