Hey All,

My new T/C Omega Z5 SS/Hardwoods/TH will be here tomorrow, so I went out and bought my materials. I have never shot a muzzleloader before, so I am hoping my bullet choice is ok.

I ended up purchasing the XTP Hunter By Hornady JHP .50 cal 250gr. 30 pack. Has anyone had experience with these? It was between these and the other Hornady polymer tipped bullets, but the gentleman explained that those may not have as good as penetration as these past 50 yards. Any insight before I go out?

I think the "gentleman" may have been a bit full of crap. I hunt with the Hornady SST's and don't have any problem with penetration at all. Both deer I shot this year had complete penetration. I wouldn't worry though, the bullets you have will perform on game nicely as long as they shoot well out of your gun.

My buddie has the omega :He has found that the hornady xtp 240 grain bullet in 44 cal, load alot easy compared to the xtp mag: in his omega.
I also gave him some of my buffalo sst 375 grain sabot to try and the group are outstanding with pyrodex select powder and load like silk.
He has the tried the SST in his gun and was not happy with the group,the SST are an outstanding bullet out to 200 yards if your gun will like them.I have a t/c thunderhawk in 54 cal,seem they will clover leaf at the 50 yard target ,but open up a little too much at the 100 yard target.
The Buffalo sst will clover leaf at the 100 yard target in my thundehawk,they are listed as .451 diameter but really more like .449 and loading is outstanding .

I once used the SST's in my LK-93. Averaged 2-3 inch groups at 100, complete penetration, even through a nearly 200lb doe's, both front shoulders. However, both the deer I shot, the bullet NEVER expanded. I switched to the 300 grain 452 bullet and I'm glad I did. 4 shot group at just under an inch, at 100 yards, with 90 grains of RS. Shot a little doe last week at 50 yards. Knocked her right down. Complete expansion on exit wound,,looked like an inch hole. I noticed there was some expansion on entry. The two SST shots, both deer ran 40 and 100 yards,,, with NO blood trail.

As some one has already pointed out - you may not get those Hornady SST's down the barrel of your Omega. They most likely come packaged with MMP HPH-12 sabots with are way to thick for the Omega... The TC Schockwave which is a Hornady SST with TC name on it comes with a MMP HPH-24 sabot that is thinner and my go down your barrel a lot easier.

And I kind of hate to mention this - there a suggestion/RUMMOR that the TC barrels are tight on purpose to almost force you to use the TC product line. I am pretty sure right now MMP is producing a special 44 HPH sabot thinner than the normal so they can be loaded into the Omega

If your SST's will not go down try finding some HPH-24's or regular Havester sabots. Harvester also makes a "crush rib" sabot that is the thinnest sabot I have encountered to so far.
