Dear Folks,

I spotted a Browning Low Wall on the Web that I would really like to have (like new, $1,000), but of course with my 51 year old eyes, I can't see anything without a scope.

1. Are there any big problems in drilling/tapping a Browning Low Wall for a scope. ( I assume that they do not come d/td?)

2. I guess that this destroys any collector's value???

Unless it's one of the "Traditional Hunter" models, it should already have scope blocks mounted, or available with it. The TH versions come with iron sights; don't know whether they're readily modified for scope mounting (i.e., whether they're drilled & tapped already). My .223 LoWall had the blocks in place.

They are drilled and tapped. They do not come with any sights or scope blocks. Browning did make base and rings for it and Leupold and Burris still do. As far as I've been able to determine that's it. I heard rumors of Weaver bases but I think that was a mistake as high walls are all I can find in the Weaver line.

Is there a difference in the drilling pattern for the low/high walls? There's very little difference in the actions themselves.. Better call Brownells Tech line or Browning service to be sure.

There is enough difference in the physical dimensions so that the bases for the high wall will not work with the low wall. I've been thru all this before personally. I owned both and have discussed it all with Browning.

Just buy the Leupold or Burris base for the LW and use either Burris or Leupold standard rings with it. There are no other options unless you want to custom make a base.

Dear Folks,

The Browning low wall I was looking at on-line was a Traditional Hunter. Does anyone know whether these come drilled/tappedd? (I sure don't mind buying leupold or burris mounts and rings, I just hate having a gunsmith fooling with d/t. There is always about a 20% chance that they will mess it up, by not getting it totally centered in line.)

The difference is the barrels. the diameter in the case of round barrels and then there are the octogon barrels... Weaver lists bases for octogon barrels in the high wall while leupold lists for highwall or low wall.. As to whether it's drilled or not..ask the seller!

All of the Japanese made Brownings both Low Wall and High Wall are drilled and tapped for scopes. Except for the most recent rimfire versions of the LW all were octagon barrels. Barrel size and frame size both is drastically less than on the HW. I've held both in hand at same time and took the measurements. I've owned several of them altho I don't own any at this time.

Now the originals came with both round and octagon barrels but to the best of my knowledge none of the more recent Browning ones came with round barrels. There were octagon and half round half octagon.
