The Mossberg chuckster is the 22 magnum! Its the one that got the ball rolling so to speak for the 22 magnum lovers! Id love to have one and find a good weaver scope to put on it shoot some Winchester Super X 40gr. HPs in it. To me there could be no finer old 22 magnum rifle. mag-check

I had a chuckster once , many years ago when I was young and not to bright, traded it off. Mag-Check , I'm with you , sure wish I had that rifle back. As for ammo, luckily most of the mags I have owned like the Win 40 gr. jhps, and in my opinion it is the best round for the larger small game ,(ie) foxes, cats and coyotes. Great penetration and controled expansion. Never been real fond of the weaver scopes, but that's just me.
Anyway the mags have served me well for a lot of years, never had a bad one!!!! Don't think such a thing EXIST!!!!!! :grin:

The reason I said Weaver scope is I want to keep that old style look. Last year I got me a Remington 5mm magnum 591 and 11 boxs of 5mm ammo sold the gun and ammo back in August and looking back I wish Id took the money from the 5mm and got a chuckster, the 5mm wasnt a very good killer of game that I thought it was going to be! Right now Im looikg for a good chuckster maybe by spring time Ill have one. They had a nice chuckster on gun broker last time I looked maybe there be another come up soon. The chuckster that was on gun broker looked like a new one man I wish Id got the gun! Mag-Check

I was given a new Westernfield 822A (aka: Chuckster), when I was a young teenager. I got the gun around 1970. Still looks brand new. Anyway, that started the love affair with the WMR. It only shoots 1.25 -1.50 @ 50. It doesn't shoot the light stuff very well. --- I'm thinking about taking 1-2" off the barrel. It might shoot better. It might shoot worse. It's a very long rifle, to begin with due to the 24" barrel and the hammerless bolt.

I don't think there was "anything" wrong with the way that 5mm killed game, i think it was all "poor shooting" on your part from YOU fliching every time you pulled the trigger thinking about how much that 5mm shell was worth!!!! :-D heee he heee

No, I had the 5mm magnum out many times very disapointed in its performance on small game! If the 5mm work better then the 22 magnum I would have the gun right now but bullet performance was pretty bad! One big swamp rabbit I shot at 75yds. had very small exit hole it actually showed that there was now bullet expansion at that range had several rabbits run off after good solid hits from the 5mm and that was after being shot at inside 50yds! No, the 5mm looked good on paper ballistics but in the field it was a turd, glad I got rid of the rifle and ammo! Go to Varminter .com I took some pictures and posted them of some squirrels I shot with the 5mm mag one shot was at 35yds. the other at 15yds. If those squirrels were shot with the 22 magnum using the Rem V-max or Winchester Supreme it would have blown them in two!

I used the 5mm for many years and was completely impressed with it's performance. Of course, i wasn't trying to blow animials apart, i was trying to get clean kills and have something to eat out of the deal. I shot a lot of grouse and rabbits with the 5mm for my freezer.

Those days the 5mm easily out performed the 22 Win. mag for me, and i used it right up untill the ammo was discontinued.

At that time i also was an animial control officer, and the 5mm easily out did the 22wmr in "that" catagory too! The area was over run with strays and even a couple of dog packs that had attacked people, so there was no shortage of targets to compare the two side by side. I also used a 17 Rem, 22 Hornet, 222 Rem, 243 Win. and several others over that time peroid. It depended on where i was, as to what i used.

Drilling man I wish that I had something good to say about the 5mm mag but I couldnt see anything that would lead me to believe that the 5mm was better then anything that the 22 magnum had to offer! As far as it being better then the Winchester 40gr. Super X Hp. the very first round chambered for the 22 magnum that it just sillyness on your part! The true jacketed Win HP is still today the best of the best in rimfire ammo of any kind. Now maybe someday the 5mm will make a come back but if it does they need to change that small Hp. bullet. What Remington needs to do is come out with a Ballistic tip in a thin jacketed rimfire style bullet. And they need to drop the bullet weight to say 32. 0r 35gr. but nothing larger then that. Or a pointed soft point bullet then they might have something in the 5mm. When I shot two of those rabbits at 50yds. and made good solid hits and watch them run off, well thats when the 5mm went on the for sale list! Mag-Check

Your probable right as i sat down and gave it some thought. I believe i only had something over 300 kills (yes three hundred) with the 5mm and i'm sure more than that with the 22wmr at THAT time. I probable need to get them both back out and retest everything. (useing OLD ammo of course)

At "that" time i took great pains to see how every bullet performed in what ever i shot. I was just getting into mfg,ing my own premium bullets for sale, and i just couldn't get enough info on the subject.

I remember recovering several perfectly mushroomed 5mm bullets out of bigger animials and realizeing that they looked like how big game bullets "should" look when recovered.

How many 5mm Rems rounds did you test on game again?

It didnt take that many for me to see that the 5mm needed help! I didnt want to waste my time shooting round after round to see the same thing over and over again. 6 squirrels and 10 or 12 rabbits was enough for me! The problem with you 5mm shooters is you no that not many people are going to go through what I went through just to test the 5mm on game $250.00 for a rifle that wasnt worth $100.00 bucks! $50.00 dollars a box for ammo sometimes higher then that. So you guys crow about how good the 5mm is knowing that your small group of 5mm shooters isnt going to say anything bad about the 5mm. Now when a shooter like myself takes the time goes out and test the rifle and ammo and tells the truth about it ,and blows the myth about the big bad 5mm and how good it isnt ,"which is real the truth" :lol: You guys won't let up with your story telling! The 5mm 591/592 rifles were droped after 3years by Remington no one would pick the cartridge up, so that should tell you something. The 5mm died because it wasnt a very good design all the way around. Mag-check

Well, if you think shooting a couple rabbits and a few squirells is a better test than what i did, that's ok with me. I don't think it will take a rocket scientist to figure that one out though....

I'm not sure who the "you guys" are??? I just tell it like "i" experenced it myself, and that was over several years of shooting not a few days in the squirell woods. I honestly don't give a hoot if no one ever buys one again or if anyone else likes a 5mm. I just related what i did and what i found. If you don't like them, that's ok with me...

Back a few years ago when OWS was trying to bring back the 5mm magnum I was talking to the owner of OWS Dangerous Dan himself, and he refered to the 5mm magnum shooters as fanatics! I told him I was thinking about getting a 5mm just for the fun and do some testing and he said go out and buy some Winchester Supreme ammo for the 22 magnum much better round and it won't cost you $50 a box! Now that I think about it maybe it was back in 1997 or there abouts god were does the time go. But when I said you guys I ment you 5mm mag fanatics.

Do you know that back in 1980 right before Remington droped the 5mm ammo it was going for $9.00 a box! Im paying $8.75 for the Winchester Supreme ammo now. Take care Drilling man. Mag-check

the chucksters are excellent rifles. I had one once, got dumb and traded it off, was the most accurate 22 mag I have ever held. I'm soon getting another 22 mag but it's a rossi singleshot, hope it shoots as good as my LR.

Back in the day the 22 magnum chuckster was a real shooter! I have an old article written by John Lachuck I think I spelled his last name right. Anyway he talks about the old Chuckster shooting some 1" five shot groups with the 22 magnum using the Win Super X 40gr.HP ammo! When I first read the article I had to laugh, I said to myself yes theres the old inaccurate 22 magnum. :grin: Mag-Check

I wish mine shot better. It's like brand new. I'm the original owner, and come to think of it, it may not even be broken in. I was going to say the best I could do at 50yrds. is 1.33 @ 50. That's with CCI Maxi 40gr. Everything else is 1.50"+. I was thinking about shortening the barrel a couple of inches, to see what happens. I Figure it couldn't be worse.

In all these years, I bet Ive only shot about 200 rounds in it. Only about 100 rounds 2 1/2 yrs. ago. The other 100 or so were in the 70's. Is it possible that it isn't broken in? Is there such a thing as having to re-brake-in a rifle, after such a long period in the gun safe?

Pecci, have you tried freefloating the barrel or maybe it needs a little pressure at the end of the stock, glass bedding the action? What kinda scope you got on that thing? Mag-check

Hi Magcheck, I floated the barrel a couple of weeks ago, but have not fired it since. Th scope is a rather new, 3x9x32, Simmions Deerfield. Not top-end by any means, but I have another one on another rifle, that works well, especially for the $$$.
