Author Topic: Problems with handy rifle (Read 1086 times)

I took my 223 Handy Rifle out to sight it in today, first round pierced the primer, got the action open, second round, pierced primer, then the action started popping open on firing, did this for about 8 rounds,then it started miss firing, trigger was pulled all the way back, hammer was all the way down, i stoped and came home, to check things out, do i need to send this rifle back to the factory to see if the firing pin is to long and to have the locking bolt checked to see why its not locking up, any info would be appreciated, WF.

send it back to the factory ring the service dept first but they should fix the problem that is not good.good luck.

if your using handloads your just too hot . in my 204 and my 308 when i go way too hot they start popping open.

but if your not using handloads then your firing pin is too long ( had it happen on my 204 , you could see the stretch mark) . something to think about is for about the same cost of shipping you could get a firing pin form brownells and put it in your self (took my like 15 minutes).

If it isn't as what has already been said..you can check with who you purchased the gun from,and see if you can exchange it.Talk with them and see...sometimes a regular gun dealer will do this for you and then send the gun back in...or they will take care of it for you...

We met with the fine folks of H&R at the Shot Show, they sent 2 rifles to a friend of mine and we were to shoot them and write up a article to be sent to the The Varmint Hunter Mag. then we had the option to buy them or send them back to the factory, i bought one and a friend of mine bought the other one.

I guess you could say i bought it used, i don't have the box, and i don't have any paperwork on where to send it, the man i bought it from and i are no-longer friends(long Story).

I was shooting factory ammo in it, Federal 55 FMJ to sight it in with, if you gentlemen have a phone number and address of where to send it, would you please post it here for me, also do i need to remove the stock, i have re-finished the stock and forearm, don't want them to get scratched up, really appreciate all the help your giving me, WF.

They're closed right now until Jan 7th...Info on repair is on their web site...I'd contact them and ask them to cover the cost of shipping either by reimbursement or issuing a call tag for pickup by UPS.

Matt's advice is good, they have a reputation for damaging stocks, so if you have a standard Handi stock to send with it, it would be advised. We've been told by H&R that they won't test fire a rifle without a stock set, dunno if that's a fact or not.

it would be a very good idea to stop firing a gun that pierced a primer.i think you should of stoped shooting the firearm after the 2nd one and then try to find out ?why?never keep on fireing it :?

never keep firing a gun that pierces a primer.lot of pressure and hot gasses are comming back into the action.i think the fireing pin is now cooked.

pierced primers are not a good thing

Thanks for the links and info, it only pierced 2 primers, then the action started popping open, funny, when the action started popping open it stoped piercing primers, i guess ill leave the stock on it so they can test fire it, thinking of maybe wrapping the stock with something to protect it, i fitted the stock to the action and varnished it and its really beautiful with the maple burl in the wood, i took the firing pin out and cleaned it up, looks ok as far as i can see, spring is still strong, this little rifle will really shoot, was shooting 3/4 groups with FMJ ammo, the other rifle that was sent to us was shooting 3/8 groups, think its a keeper, thanks again, WF.

if you have already removed the firing pin why dont you just order one like was suggested from brownells. that way you'll have your rifle sooner and wont take a chance on gettin that stock messed up.

White feather,the barrel popping open could be caused by ANY oil on the barrel latch....as Bull' suggested,you could just replace the firing pin and see if it fixes the problem

FMJ ammo? Mil surplus? Most likely the problem. Shoot some WalMart white box 45 gr stuff and see if it works. Handi's aren't for the surplus stuff. Larry

If you have gone to the trouble of finishing the stock and want to keep it beatiful...remove it and send it in with out it on it...7 times out of 10 it will get scratched or worse...and they will replace it..but it won't be finished like you had it...

Gentlemen

I think i have fixed most of my problems, i have yet to test fire it and see.

When i went to install the fireing pin, it kept binding on me, so i glued it to a piece of drill rod and put some Flitz on it and chucked in into a cordless drill motor, inserted it back into the hold and run the drill motor a few seconds, took it out and cleaned the area, put more Flitz on and run it a few more seconds, no more bind.

I also took the trigger group out and was looking at how it was locking up, there was a small bur on the under side where the locking bolt goes, took my dremel and got rid on the bur, then removed the locking bolt and de bured it and polished it up, it is locking up very nicely now.

Im also going to do a trigger job now that i have it all torn down, i put it in my new parts washer and it washed lots of small pieces of metal out, so that may have been some of my problems, i got to looking at the primers on the fired shells and you can see where the fireing pin was stuck and it scratched the end of the shell when i opened the action, think maybe it had some metal loged inside someplace that caused the problem, dont think im going to send it back now, after the trigger job im going to put it all back together and go test fire it, i really appreciate all the info and help, its really appreciated, WF.
