New .17HMR Rifle. first Impressions.
« on: December 04, 2005, 03:22:34 PM »
Picked up my sportster yesterday from our crowded Wal Mart. Had some time this morning so I pulled it apart and cleaned the grunge out, slicked up the action per the tutorial and Perklo's PDF, reduced the trigger to right at 3lb, cleaned up the scope base holes and re locktited the screws in, then cleaned and lapped the bore a bit.

Not bad, but I'm waiting on the scope and ammo I ordered. Want to shoot ASAP.

Looking forward to target work

expect nothing but wonderfull sub MOA 100yrd groups. Give it at least 150rnd before it calms down and settles is group and POI though. What kind of scope you putting on it? I think the BSA Sweet 17 is about the best companion for a .17 but thats just me and my sportster

Spent a bit of time outside today bore sighting and getting the basic zero down on my Sportster. The Simmons 44 Mag 6.5-20X Scope works fine and once on paper at 50 yards, I was able to keep all rounds inside 1" target squares. Not bad for shooting over a lawn chair outside on a blustery day. I can't wait to get out the sandbags and rest for 100 & 200yd work.

This one's a keeper!

ya give it about 100more rounds before it settles it's POI and group size, also i find my sportster likes a bipod and will take out bottles at 200+yrds consistantly, in fact i never miss a well aimed shot. with the BSA sweet 17 on, ranging est with the AO then matching that estimate with the elevation turret markings to the range equaled a busted bottle the first try.
