Didn't read the links so the answer may be there, but who is chambering for this thing? Sounds better than interesting, should be a natural for cast.

Edit: Went and looked......Sako. Figures. Would that Marlin/NEF would get some gonads and create something as neat as this. So many good options exist yet Marlin/NEF wring their hands, look into their crystal ball and bring us the 500 StupendousWannabe. If they would just neck down that 450 Marlin case to 375 or 35 or 338 even. What a great rifle such would make. Oh well.

This also raises the issues of the rate of twist. Would this need a 1-10 or 1-9..8?
Interesting, though I am sure wildcats have been doing it for awhile.
But still, interesting non the less.
Funny how many good, "standard" ,caliber rounds have come from wildcats.

Standard twists for .338 is 1:9", 1:10" and 1:12". My .338-06 is 1:10". Montana barrels even list 1:16".

:agree: well then there ya go.
I was going to post about this seperate, but this seems fitting. What about a 308 Norma Mag? Comparable close to a 300 Win Mag with less pressures...I believe. I am just starting out reloading so I don't pretend to know it all by any means! -just putting it out there. A man of humble means. :toast:
But seems fitting for a Handi too.

Aaron, you're gonna have to ask someone else on the magnumbs as Zeke calls em, never owned or even shot one.....A friend had a .308 Norma mag, was a heavy rifle and he said it still kicked him bad.....I never asked to shoot it. Hodgdon Ballistics show that it's about the same as the .300 win mag for 180gr loads, max at about 3000fps......Hmmm, Mac's .338-06 shoots 180gr Accubonds at just a tad over 3000fps!!

Yeah that's about what the Speer maunel says too. Just made me curious if a Handi would lend it's self to it.
Thanks Tim

Hi All...back for a few minutes..Arron...look up what the 338-06 is capable of doing and then look at the  280 Remington and the 270's pressure wise ...the larger diameter bullets and shorter bearing surface equates to lower pressures...or so all the techs I talk with tell me.. :) Also..the awsome cut rifeling and excellent chambering job Wayne did really helps a-lot too...

I really wish the .338/06 and .35 Whelen would catch on better with the public, along with the .358 Winchester.

I'm not encouraged by Federal's choice to make the .338-08, and think they'd have been much smarter to offer .338/06 ammo and expand their .35 Whelen offerings to include a 200 grain load.  Methinks the .338-08 will be a bust.

I think the 338-08 miight just have a following. Look at all the short cartridges that have been introduced the last few years. I'm a 35 cal fan, but will admit that the 338 cal bullets will do MOST of the work that 35 cal bullets will do on the same case: 338-06 vs 35 Whelen. In a Handi, there is no advantage to the shorter cases, but in a bolt, lever or semi action, it is a different story. And a lot of shooters prefer the shorter actions. Will I unload my 35s for the newer 338s, no, but I think it will develop a following, partly due to the excellent selection of bullets in that caliber.

Funny thing I was just thinking about a round like this the other day (figuring it had to be out there). If federal's numbers are true, that's pretty good performance. Even if it is a dud and gets dropped it not like 308 brass and 338 bullets are going to dissapear anytime soon.

Then I got to thinking, there is a Israili converted K98 in 308 that's not being used in my dad's cabinet. Cut  the barrel back to the first step 18-20" if I remember correctly, on account that I am not sure the final step has the meat to handle  338 bore.  Either a scout or conventinal scope mount, though I think I am leaning to the scout style. Add a plastic stock and a timiny trigger and I think it be a pretty cool rig.

I guess I've expressed it before, but I'll say it again.  I like H&R's caliber selection, but in the small and medium bore range, they are only missing some sort of 6.5mm and .338 offerings.  I don't expect them to have too many different rounds for every bore diameter, but atleast one in each of the major calibers would be nice and would atleast get every ones flavor on the plate to work with.  My vote has always been 6.5 x 55 and 338-06, however a .260 or 338 Fed would be fine.

I don't consider the 35 caliber to be lacking, as there are 35 W running around past, and future, along with .357's.

Perhaps I could be off base here, and I will admit if I am wrong.
But those numbers sound very close to the old 8mm Mauser cartridge. And it's 100 years old.
Is this a step forward, or just what we pretty much had performance wise with the 100 year old German?
Yes I know the 8mm is .323 not .338.
And I suppose there is a greater assortment of bullets for the .338.
Still a cool round, though I think the old 8mm holds it ground here.
Just though I'd put it out there  .

Aaron,
I have an 8mm mauser and its a very fine rifle. I have only had it for 2 years and it was bought as an un issued rifle. The Ole gal is a sub moa, I was real pleased with it. I started looking up reloading data for the rifle on the net and found out  that its a very under rated cartridge here in the States. US reloading books from what I gathered have the round loaded down in the reloading books because they feel they want to be safe in recommended loading data for older rifles.  I guess what I am saying is the US 8mm  reloading data is on the light side.  I am sure the new 338 round may fill the bill for some folks.

Hi

I would get one in a heartbeat IF nef offered it.  I would prefer a longer 24-26 inch barrel.  I would lean more in the direction of a .338-06 because I have a custom bolt rifle in that caliber.

Take care and God bless.

Yeah I remember reading that the old factory loads-like Remingtons- weren't much more powerful than a 30-30 :?  :)
Over seas they have been using it for years, and with some powerful loads, they have some real data. But like you said though American loadaers were afraid people might use it in an old rifle that might not be able to take the pressures. It might not be the fastest cartridge, but it boasts some good energy.
But I still look forward to any new production round that comes out. It's always nice to throw something new in the mix.

Nooooooo!!!  The Israeli 308s if in any good condition are some wonderful guns desired by many, including me!  Please do any such thing to a Turk or other less special Mauser and if you wish to part with the Izzy '98 let someone love it for what it is!  (ie me ;) )
