Rem 700 SS BDL in 7mm SAUM or 300 SAUM- results?
« on: December 07, 2005, 11:18:49 AM »
Thank you in advance-

I am contemplating a rifle for Elk if all goes well next fall and the offer of this rifle @ 400.00 is pretty tempting. My questions is how has this rifle performed in these cartridges and constructive criticism of this choice-- with the caveats, I am happy with the weight, premium bullets will be used regardless of caliber and no less than 100 rounds will be fired in practice before it is hunted.

     Thanks,
           Bill

I own a 7 saum but in a ruger and really like the cart. even better than the wsm. The case is better and it is plenty hot. The 300 saum is a good cart as well. I know that I am in a minority with the rem's but i feel that this is only because Win came out first and that history wil prove the rem's a better cartridge.

You'll get naysayers but I agree totally with Reelhook. I don't know about the 7 from first hand experience, just what I've read. Some will say that the 300 saum will die soon but thats the one I would buy because if your going to burn alot of powder you may as well push a larger caliber and 30 cal is really an all around cal in my opinion.  If your worried about ammo availability and don't plan to ever handload you can always stock up on ammo once you find the round your gun likes.  The 180 grn Swift Scirrocos that Rem loads is a very good round in an ultra mag and the Nosler partition 200 grn federal loads are probably all a hunter would ever need. When I first bought my ultra mag as many do I thought the 150s would be the way to go but you give up sectional density, probably more wind drift and while slower from the muzzle , the 180 will probably out perform it at very long range. Also because it is a little slower you should get better performance if you suddenly find yourself with a close shot because it's not easy to construct a bullet that expands reliably yet holds together at very high speed impact velocities.  Others here more knowledgable than I may wade in on bullet selection but having hunted with a rum these are my conclusions so far. Hope this helps.  :D

And you can take heart in the fact that after Remington drops the RSAUM cartridges you can always take one to a gunsmith and have it re-chambered to either the 7mm or .300 WSM.  My gunsmith has done a number of them already.  Lawdog

For elk I 'd think you would be better off with the 300saum.  I plan on getting one to try you never know till you shoot one  and I will start stocking up on cases.  I just put up my custom 300wsm for sale I've had that round.  When I had a 30-338 build we had a combination elk and deer season so I used a Rem 165 gr corelokt  figure it would do the job and it did so I'm thinking the same bullet for the 300saum.  Will be interesting to compare velocity between the two calibers besides the custom 300wsm I had a t-3 and the custom started life a a FWT model.  The factory FWT and t-3 were pretty close in velcoity.  Well good luck.

Thanks gentlemen! The other rifle of consideration is/was the Coyote Lite in 300WSM but at 300.00 less money(boots and brass or binos), the Remmy is looking better all the time & I can always rebarrel it down the line should the throat go, brass become hard to get or I just get bored :)
I REALLY like my LVSF in 7mm-08 but do not want to put myself in a position of not enough umph to get an exit wound- prefer one for tracking game in unfamiliar terrain. 180 Nosler or 165/168gr TSX looking good from here...

    Thanks again,
