did a 3rd and 4th grade trapping show
« on: March 10, 2003, 02:04:32 AM »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Was asked by my daughters 3rd geade teacher to come in and talk to her class about trapping . They are studying the early fur trade in their social studies and thought that would be interesting for them to meet a real trapper . Well the teacher also invited the 4th grade to listen in also . It went very well , ALL the kids got involved asking questions . Girls acted just as interested as the boys . I showed them the tools used and methods of trapping certain furbearers and talked about wildlife management . They seemed to understand how important it was . Toward the end , one of the most asked question was (asked by about 5 kids ) , "how old do I have to be to trap" and " where do I get a lisence "? It was very cool to see these kids get so involved !!This was my first time ever doing something like this . I had 4 teachers and about 50 kids in the room and there was not one person that acted uninterested .No wispering back and fourth , or goofing around , I kept everybodies attention .It was actually kind of fun and would like to do it again .

Thats GREAT ! i did the same thing to for a project this year at school ( 9th grade ). i wasnt allowed tobring in traps or anything. but i told them alot about trapping. people now think alot differnetly about trapping and furs. they learned so much and i was glad to tell them all about it. people have just been misinformed from somewhere and though many werid things and i answered alot of question. i passed around a tanned muskrat and they loved how soft it was ! lol

It will all go good . The teacher and I both agreed that there would be no plan to this . The only thing she wanted me to cover was , why , and how?. Other than that she said to wing it .

Hats off to you Dan, and to the others working to educate our young people about trapping.  This truly is the "front line" in the battle to keep trapping alive in our society.  Most opposition I have ever encountered to trapping is born of ignorance, and as important as it is to support local and national trapping associations, this type of direct and positive exposure of our young people to the realities of trapping is invaluable.  As a fellow trapper, I thank you.
