barrel length for 200yds+
« on: March 07, 2003, 03:07:13 PM »
I have just bought a stainless 7-30 waters contender and I want to hunt coyotes with a .223 barrel. I am wondering if a super 14 would do the trick or should I get longer barrel, say 18 or 22 to 26, for shooting on cutovers 200+ yards for coyotes? Is Fox Ridge a good barrel company?

dbuz,
I shot metalic target at 200meters with a 14". Targets were ??27"hi X 30" wide, no problems. I'm guessing if you do your part it aughtto do the trick.

I regularly shoot ground hogs, a target around 18" high by 6" wide, at distances out to 400 yards, with a .223. 14".

I've shot my .30 Bellm at over 200 yds with no problem from a 13.5" barrel. Going 'yote hunting in the next couple weeks and it's all I'm taking.

a 14" barrel will be fine, as long as you practice up and learn to use it. a good rest will help also. fox ridge is tc's custom shop. never had their barrel yet, but as far as i know they are just like a factory barrel. they are just marked different and offered in many more calibers. someone correct me if i'm wrong :D

Custom shop barrels let you specify length, contour, finish, etc, that you can't get from a factory barrel. They are excellent quality.  KN

I shoot both of my Super14 and 14” Hunter in.223 with no problems at all hitting coyote sized targets out to 200+.

However, you might want to consider a 16” rather than the 14” for the versatility of using in a carbine configuration as well as a handgun.
