Question for anybody shooting a 7mm-08 encore pistol
« on: February 24, 2006, 04:58:01 AM »
I just bought my first Encore pistol and I am haveing a problem with its accuracy.  I put a Bushnell trophy pistol cope on it with leopold duel dovetail rings.  I can get it to a pattern a couple of shots at 35yard in abought and 1 inch pattern, but then it throws 2 or 3 shots 6 to 10 inches apart and then it will be back on for a couple of shots. Does anyone have any suggestions.

are you using factory or handloads?
are you changing your grip when you reload the barrel?
are you using a rest of some kind?
are you flintching when the round goes off?
is everything on the scope, rings, mounts tight?
is the scope know to be good?

I am using factory loads, Rem 120grain, also using a rest, sitting at a concrete table, I dont think I am changing my grip, The scope is new so I suppose it is good, it is tight on the leopold base.

I can't imagine that my ideas could be the only problems there could be many I can't think of off the top of my head.  Some people have said they add a small washer between the barrel and fore end to take any pressure off the barrel.  It may be worth a try, especially if the group runs verticaly.

In past posts others have found that experimenting with the way you hold the pistol grip can help.  I can't remember their suggestions.  You could do a search of the forum.

In order to rule out flinching you could have a friend assist by being in charge of loading.  Allow him to load the gun sometimes and not other times without you knowing and you attempting to fire.  If you are concerned about dry firing, you could use a Snap Cap.  This could be a way to see if, when you pull the trigger, you flinch.  The flinching my pull the shots off target.  When you attempt to fire without a round in the chamber many times and only a few attempts send a round down range, you might be less apt to anticipate the recoil.

Good luck, Ken

Is it the wood grip and fore end type or do you have the TC rubber grip and fore end? On mine with wood fore end I had to free float it to get it to shoot tight groups. Mine did just like yours until I did that. What I did was to use several layers of black electrical tape with a hole in it for the screw to pass thru. This effectively floated the fore end from the barrel and immediately groups tightened to MOA.

What is the length of the barrel ? My 7-08 in 10" first year will not shoot anything but 140's , I have a 4x Leupold on it and no problem . If you can find any of the old Remington factory loads (not Express) buy them , there is a big difference .
GOOD-LUCK !

I shoot a 15" Encore 7mm-08, 2x Burris. From a bench, at 100 , it will shoot 1"-1 1/2" groups all day long. Use 139 grain Hornady Lite Mags, dropped a doe at 95 yards last fall. My favorite deer pistol........also have 357 Max, 460 S&W and 45-70 barrels.

I appreciate the info Ihave a rubber grip and a rubber foreend on it I am resting the foreend on the rest and not the barrell, since this is my first pistol with a scope I thought about putting my butt stock for my rifle on it to site in the scope to make sure that the scope is sited in and the put the pistal grip back on and continue praticing , thae way I figure is back at least that way I should be able to make sure the scope is on. Would this work for the scope. Also this should rule out flinching since the encore will be in a rest anmd on my shoulder.  I have heard that the gun is illegal to do this but  I think it would be okay if I changed it at the range and put it back to pistol form before I left the range. Graybeard I would like to know more about how and where you put the electric tape on the foreend. thanks

If you have an EER scope the rifle stock will not help. You will not be able to see through the scope. Also I like to sight in my guns for the way I will be shooting them. I sight them in off the bench to get them shooting there best, then I shoot form different positions  and off shooting sticks.

I have a Bushnell pistol trophy scope I put the stock on it the other day and looked through it I cant see the whole pictur ebut i can see about half of it, I am new to the pistol shooting I have always wanted to hunt with a pistol so I finally had enough money to buy the encore 7mm-08 15inch barrell so like I said I've never really shot a pistol with a scope before so I am just learning.  I agree shooting the pistol like I would in the woods is ideal but I am just tring to make sure the scope is sighted in, then I will practice, practice, practice, to make sure I am good enough of a shot to Kill a Deer cleanly and quickly.

Be aware that you just admitted publicly and in writing to a violation of a federal firearms violation.  If you created a rifle with a barrel length of less than 16 inches it is illegal period.  The fact you were not hunting with it is not material.  I recommend that you don't do this.

take of fthe scope and put back on the factory sights (if you have them) and try and see how it shoots with them. also try diffrent brands and weight ammo.

Give the barrel a very good cleaning inbetween shoots

I went shooting on sat 24 and I shot several times and I think that it is me just getting used to shooting a big pistol with a scope, something I've not done before.  I am getting better at shooting it and starting at 35 yards and getting them to pattern at about an inch with rem 12o grain express. ammo so I am going to move it out to 50 yards and get better there and keep moving farther when I get used to a yardage. I really enjoy getting to shoot this gun. I think I will get a smaller barrell for it to keep getting used to shooting the Encore.

Have the trigger done, that made the biggest difference to me! You will be suprised at how much a light crip trigger helps. I will bet you are flinching, I just went through this. I am now settleing down and my groups are coming together. Good luck!

Do you have to have a authorized Thompson Center gunsmith to do the work on it. I didn't know if it would void the warranty if someone else did it.

Take it to a competent gunsmith that is familiar with the T/C's. I think all manufacturers say it voids the warranty to cover their butts, but they expect you to lighten the trigger.

bit once it is worked on and you send it back to T/C they will put it back into spects so all the trigger work will have to be redone

What is the recoil like for this round in a handgun?  Never been a handgun hunter, but want to get into it.  How does it compare to a 44 mag?

Can't tell you about the 7mm-08, but the recoil from the 30/06 with a 15" barrel isn't bad.

This is my first Encore pistol 7mm-08 the recoil I thought was going to be bad, but it isnt bad after you get used to shooting it I need to get a trigger lightened because I still want to flinch before pulling the trigger and I think the recoil anticipation is part of my problem.  but I am getting better at shooting it and more used to it.

I bet you are flinching.  I too have just got an Encore in 7mm-08 with a 15" barrel and it is topped with a Bushy Trophy handgun scope.  I too am new to the world of scope handguns.  At 50yds with 140gr bullets, I was pulling off 1.25" groups.  At 100yds, I was not even getting "paper plate" accuracy.  Two things were eating me up.  1.  I was not using a rest where the bottom of the grip was also secured.  2. I am an amature scoped handgun shooter.  I was flinching bad!!  Practice with it and sight in your rifle with a good rest and I bet you will close up the groups.  Good luck. I am looking forward to taking a deer with my 7-08 this year!!
It's all a hot mess...........
