s&w 500 ammo
« on: November 14, 2005, 01:50:23 PM »
I've been using Corbon ammo in my 10 1/2" 50 Mag, but for just about the same $ I can get a 20 ct box instead of Corbon's 12 ct. I'm not into reloading yet, so my question is which do you consider the better of the factory ammo? Magtech, hornaday, Win..... and the best place to buy. I've been checking out the Ammobank, they seen to have reasonable prices. Any suggestions?

I would get the Hornady. Cor-bon has been ripping of people with the over priced 500 Mag ammo from day one. I would never buy there ammo.

Good thing is, I reload for the 500 Mag and don't have to worry about that.  :D

When I first got my S&W 500 I bought some rounds from Cor-bon never thought about the price. I haven't bought any scence then. I reload. The price of Hornady seems cheaper. If I were you I'd look around. There are several different ammo outfits that load the 500. :D

The only factory ammo i've shot out of mine is magtech and it was fairly weak. But you get 20 of them for less than 12 corbons cost. So it's a pretty good way to get brass. And even though it's weak it would still kill anything you hit with it.

I still haven't figured why the ammo, and for that matter, reloading components, are so expensive for the S&W 500. The 460 doesn't share that distinction.

The reason I was given a long time ago was, the 500 Mag was a new cartridge and all the components need to be made. That there was no existing supplies. When Pete Pi of cor-bon came out with his 500 Mag ammo, I called him and asked him the same question. He said he had to pay for the load development. I later find out that Jamison International was the actual ones that developed the 500 Mag for cor-bon.

Also for the 460, a lot of the components were already out there. But look at Cor-bon, they are still trying to make a killing on there ammo. Cor-bon equals rip off in my book.

Redhawk1    The 500 and the 460 ammo is a little pricey. Look at the Ultras
that rem has out. The ammo is out of sight. Thats why I reload
I know you reload too. The ammo is getting a little to high like it always has been. :D
