i have been looking at the 204 ruger for varmits. i have been told that the 22-250 is better for long range varmits a buddy(who varmits and comp shoots all the time) says that it loses it steam @ about 400 yards thats fine for me i dont plan on shootin out that far(if i can help it lol) anybody else have any suggestions or comments. do yall think this caliber will stick around? i like the heavy fluted barrel but dont know if im too keen on the choate stock. thanks btw i finally got some ammo for my 45-70 and shot it TALK ABOUT FUN what a neat bullet cant wait to get set up to reload it and do some serious lead slingin'

From the number of firearms mfrs that chamber for the .204 and it's popularity on the Varmint and Predator forums, I have no doubt that it's here to stay.

Compared to .22-250 ballistics using varmint bullets, the .204 doesn't gives up anything, in fact, it shoots flatter and has more energy,  and the .204 has much longer barrel life.

There has been a 204 Handi in the case at my local Walmarts for a while now.  For some reason I notice it everytime I go there.  Don't know if it is calling me or what.  I think it is $199.00.  Is that a fair price?

I'd like it a lot more if I could shoot it more often!! Haven't started reloading for it yet, but hope to soon. It's cool seeing bullet holes appear on the paper without any muzzle jump or recoil to obscure the impact.  :wink:

I haven't shot anything but paper with mine, but check out the Prairie Dog shoot forum below this forum, lots of PDs shot well past 400yds. If ya want info on the effectiveness of the .204 on predators, check out the Graybeard Predator and Varmint forum, or PredatorMasters...here's one from PM....

Though I have yet to get one with mine(this damn working for a living), there are a number of reports coming in that it is doing quite well especially on coyotes. And the current leader for fur bullet is the 35 grain berger.  The Hornadys are't too bad I'd use the 40's if I was not using the berger head. The sierras (39's) kill well but give alot of fur damage and the 32's are even softer, and probably not well suited for predators at all.

There was some talk last year that the winchester load was good for fur but at this point no one or very few seems to be using them. And there will probably not be any of the Nosler 40's in circulation for this fur season.

All the reports at PM say the 32gr Vmax makes a small hole in and no exit...it doesn't get any better than that. :wink: I suspect a shoulder shot will have a bit different affect, but the just-behind-the-shoulder shot is preferred for that reason, usually 2-3 spins and a dead yote. May be worse up close, though, memory has a habit of keeping those longer shots in mind and forgetting the close shots that I've read about! :oops:

i've killed a few with the 40's (V-max)  20 cal in with no exit . most all have been DRT kills.

I have been looking around for a .223 to long range some
ground hogs, but after reading this thread you've sparked
my interest in the .204

just looking for a good 'tool' not a collectable (read: cheap)

was just about set on the Stevens 200 in .223 ($260)

now I guess I am back to wondering...

Yup, not by much, though....depends a lot on the .223 load, I've only shot the 45gr JHP in my .223 Ultra which weighs more than my .204 which I shoot the 32gr loads in mostly, it doesn't like the 39-40gr loads.....yet!!

heh, it does have a substantial muzzle blast though!

Don't leave anything sensitive on the bench, my mobile (cell phone for you guys  :D ) hasen't been the same since.  :)   :eek:
