Purchased a 7-08 barrel and a Burris 3-9 AO pistol scope.  Not thrilled with the Burris and looking at other options.  Any suggestions???

Look at Bushnell's and Leupold. I prefer the Bushnell handgun scopes to the Leupold even though I am a Leupold guy.  :D

You may want to try the Bushnell Trophy line of handgun scopes.  Midway is running the 2-6x32 on sale right now for $139, and they are very good scopes!

Don't rule out the T/C scopes.  They are high quality and built tough.  The price is competitive with other brands as well.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

I have 2 Leupold 2X handgun, scopes 3 T/C 2.5-7 scopes, weaver 4x 2 tasco 2x scopes, redfield 2.5 x, and even a bushnell phantom 2.5.

out of all them I like the 2.5-7 T/C scopes the best in fact I (I have a new one sitting in the box)  The one I use on my hunting barrel is the 2.5-7 with lighted cross hairs. I will be honest  when I have been hunting I have yet to turn it up past 4x but it is nice to have the extra power if i want or need it. and with the lighted cross hairs I have only used them 1 time this season and that was during a dark rainy day.

I only buy Leupolds. I`ve had trouble with every other brand I`ve ever owned, which is most of them, but never with Leupold. I would recomand their 2 1/2 x 8X EER. I`ve got 2 of them right now, 1 on a .222 Rem. barrel and the other on a .357 max. barrel. Great scope.

The 3-9 is one of their older models.
FWIW
I have four Burris 3-12 LER's (all with AO's/PA's) on specialty handguns:
6.5-284(muzzle brake), 284 Win(Mag-Na-Port), 250 Sav AI, and 7.82 Patriot (tad larger than the 300 WSM and it has a brake too). I did have one of the older 2.5-7's fail me on a 338 WM Encore barrel years ago, but I also had a fixed 4x power Leupold fail me on that barrel. On one of my 3-12's had a 2-7 B.P. reticle in it by accident.
Now I could say, "Since that scope(s) failed me I will never buy another Leupold or Burris from now on."
Fact is, the only scopes I use on my SP's are 3-12 Burris LER's, Burris rifle scopes and Leupold Rifle scopes.

All companies are going to have problems now and again (production) & to top it off customer service may miss something too when you send it in. I choose not to "throw the baby out with the bath water."
For hunting my hands down choice is Burris.

This is not to say the other handgun scopes are not good, as there is a lot of good choices for handgunners.

I think fixed power, 2x or 3x, are all that are needed on a hand gun. More rugged too..........

True a 2x-3x power scope works good for general hunting, but I respectfully disagree that it is suitable or is all that is needed on a handgun.  If we were talking revolvers or revolver cartridges I would say 2-4 power myself.
Plannerman did not state whether this was for hunting only or if he also wanted/preferred higher magnification for varminting, load development or even general plinking.  The 7-08 has a lot of capabilities, even at longer ranges.
