 I have hunted the area just west of Abilene for well over 30 years. We have hunted our place near Lake Abilene for about 23 years. I am out and about on the place year round, working or feeding. In all these years I have never seen or heard of Javelina being in the area. I have seen lots of tracks that I assumed were made by the large number of feral pigs that roam through my property, but would have never suspected that some of the tracks were being made by Javelina.
Yesterday morning while deer hunting I heard my son shoot, after about ten minutes I watched him get down out of his stand, I waited a few minutes, then got down from my stand, walked up and got the pick-up, then drove down to where he was. I was expecting another deer, but was shocked to find he had killed a large boar Javelina. After walking up to the dead animal, I remembered why I quit going down to Brewster County to hunting them. It smelled worst than any skunk I have ever seen...............
My son is going to cook it over an open pit of mesquite for New Years day.........boy, I sure hope he has a tub full of "cold beer" to wash it down.
