20 Gauge slugs?
« on: May 09, 2003, 09:53:11 AM »
How will 20 gauge slugs work on whitetails and small hogs?

Is it worth the extra money to get the fancy saboted bullets like the ones Remington sells?

The (foster rifled slugs) work fine in smoothbored barrels w/ IC/M chokes.  Do not use sabots unless you have a fulled rifled barrel or rifled extended choke tube.  Hastings, I believe, warn you to NOT use Remington Copper Slugs in their rifled barrels.

Don't have any experience on hogs but 20g slugs are PERFECT for whitetail.  I live in a shotgun county and this is a favorite.  I personally have a 12 guage, but I wouldn't hesitate to use a 20.  Sighting in the 20 would be much less painfull.
Sabots are for rifles barrels.  If you have a rifled barrel then your answer is yes.  If not, get a rifled slug.  The sabots are accurate out to 100 yds+ whereas the slugs are good out to about 75 yds.  You can put a scope on a rifled shotgun barrel but one just isn't needed on a smooth bore because distances aren't so long.   Made a quick check here to check out ballistics for 20g slugs:  http://www.remington.com/ammo/ballistics/shotshell/slubkbal.htm
If I were to buy a shotgun solely for hunting whitetails I would get the 20 with a rifled barrel.
Doin' my best to keep up with Maryland's one handgun a month law.

IF you have a rifled barrel the latest 20 ga. slug technology might actually be superior to the 12 ga. slugs. I believe it is Winchester that is now out with a 20 ga. slug for use in rifled barrels that is likely the single best slug for long range deer hunting out there. Remington also has a really good 20 ga. slug choice for rifled barrels. If you are speaking of smooth barrels and foster slugs I'd stick to deer at close range only.
