35 Whelen twist rate?

What is considered the "ideal" twist rate for the 35 Whelen?  Would use bullets most likely 200-250gr.

I am not interested in a rate that "might" stabilize these weights, but rather one that is known to.  Thanks.

just got mine put together. 61 grains of reloder and 225 gn. triple shock. shoots 1" group @ 100 yds. i'll let you know fps when i get my crono. on it.

What twist rate do you have?

Do the Rem's have any stabilization issues with 250gr bullets?

I am looking at the A&B barrels which have 1-14 rate.

standard remington twist. can't think of a reason to go to 250 grain bullit over the barns 225 gn triple shock. i should be getting 2750 or 2800 fps. over 2 tons of energy at 300 yards. shoot as flat or flater than 30-06.

I have no troubles with 250 gr. bullets. It is a Remington 7600 pump rifle. My gun likes Speer Grand Slams a lot.

I had fairly poor groups with the Remington 200 gr. factory loads. The 200 gr. bullet, from what I understand, was designed for the .35 Remington and it just didn't shoot well in my gun. The 250 grain Remington bullet shot better.

The 225 grain Federal TBBC shot GREAT but at $32 a box, it was kind of expensive.

The 250 gr. Grand Slams shot the same groups in the same place as the Federals, which impressed me quite a bit. These were made for me by The Hunting Shack, a very good group to do business with. The price was $19 a box. I bought 100 shells.

Not wanting to get into reloading at this time, this was a great compromise for me.

Interesting results you have.  The 200gr round nose was most likely made for the 35 Rem but, they are the same dia so it should be a non issue.  Each barrel does have its own preferences.

Kinda goes against the grain with the 1-16 twist in the Rem and liking the heavier bullets vs the lighter ones.

Do you happen to know what velocities you get with the 250gr loads?

Have you run these loads through a chrono or are you estimating?  I seriously doubt you have over 4,000lbs of energy left at 300yds, with ANY shoulder held firearm.


Unless you can shoot the 50 BMG offhand.

I'm getting between 2450 and 2500 fps on the stuff I bought from The Hunting Shack. This is on a friend's tester, not mine, so I can't vouch for just how accurate the results are.

That 200 gr. Remington bullet is dead soft in my estimation. Maybe it doesn't like being flung so fast. I dunno, but it sure didn't fly well for me. The 250 gr. was only a bit better. Things got good when the TBBC or the Grand Slams came out, making me wonder if there was something about the construction of the bullets from Remington in this caliber that was leading to less than good results.

I consider "good" to be groups of around a 1/2 in. at 100 yards. The 250 gr. Remingtons were about an inch at 100 yards and the 200's were somewhat more than that but under an inch and a half. Maybe it is unrealistic to expect under an inch at 100 yards from a hunting firearm but that's my benchmark.

you are right. it is a over (1) ton of energy at 3oo yards. check out nosler custom ammo site. i am reading from the box of ammo i bought from them "225 nosler partiton--mv-2725--100 yds. 2518-200 yds-2319--300 yds. 2130." drop form line of sight---zero @ 200 yds=0-300 yds. -8.5. 400 yds.= -24.6. i think my hand loads will do better. i will post as soon as i can cono. these loads.

You're still quoting VELOCITY at 300yds, not energy.

BUT I ran the bullet and load data through Point Blank software and it Does show this data at 300yds 2152 fps and 2313 FPE.

Still a lot of power, though not quite 4,000FPE.

just got back from range.  62.5 gn reloder 15-225 gn triple shock. 1st 2826,2nd shot 2808. from remington 24 inch barrel. little more than 1". i can't shoot any better than that. would love see a good shooter try my rifle. anyway good elk ar any thing rifle.

My M700 Classic 35 Whelen is 1:16 twist. The factory 200 gr bullets shot around 1 MOA. The 225 gr and 250 gr bullets were under MOA.
