Any old peep sight users out there? All I could find is the Lyman in midsouth for $48. Does it lock in when set? and how durable is it. Figured some of you guys might have had them on your levers. I need one for my Browning 71 (win1886).. Not afraid to spend a little more for a good one but some of the ones I've seen for the Sharps and the like are a little steep.

You may want to take a gander at the Ashley setup. Believe it's www.ashleyoutdoors.com

I found them to be stronger, more compact, and more accurate. Again, for THESE old eyes :wink:

I forgot about Ashley's when I responded to this sight thing on the 71 thread. They are primo but are not vintage looking enough for me to put on anything but a modern rifle. The Lyman is my sight of choice for the 71. I do have the inexpensive Williams 5D's on a couple of new rifles and they are very functional if you are a one load man. I'm eventually going to upgrade to the Williams FP for them so I can more easily switch loads for different game. (The 5D isn't click adjust)AW

I have all sorts of peepers on my '86s, from bolt peeps to Williams FPs. All of 'em are very effective. I like the Lyman 21 side mount, but, my favorite is the 66WB, also a Lyman sight made for the 1886. Got one on the 45-90 and if it can hold up under that recoil it'll work for any application. It also fits the "vintage" look. I don't even try to use the tang sights for huntin', 'cause the old eyes can't pick up the target quick enough. The peeps are the way to go. 'Sides, the new guns are drilled for 'em.

86er, my Browning 1886 SRC ain't for drilled for nothin'. Also the front sight is so short, I don't think any kind of peep will be low enough to use with it. Shure would like your input on the best way to go with this. Since I'm gonna have to drill and tap anyway, I need to find out what all my options are.

I was not aware that Browning guns are not pre-drilled for receiver sights. The Miroku USRAC rifles are, so my assumption was based on manufacturer. Also, some later series original 1886 Winchesters were factory drilled for the same sights. I will have to measure to figure out the exact dimensions and location of these holes. Sorry for the misleading post. I'd better get on with my homework.
