Waders?
« on: February 07, 2006, 02:45:21 AM »
I am getting into duck huntint this year and am going to need a good pair of waders.  I also trout fish and have a pair for that.  The problem is that I need to upgrade my gear.  I have used these waders for two years and have worn a small hoe on the inside the thighs.  The one I have is a Hodgmen Canvas type.  I am not looking for a super insulated type but am open to suggetions.  Thanks Brian

ive got the cabelas 5mm neoprene.  I've had hodgmans and redheads recently too... I'd get the toughest pair of neoprenes you can afford... The difference in comfort is amazing.

Also get the highest gram thinsulate rating you can afford. Keep the others around for more temperate weather after repaired.

Go for warmth, I about froze to death this season with unseasonably cold temps. We were breaking ice a week before thanksgiving.

I agree with SX2. Go for warmth. I have a pair of the 1600 gram thinsulate waders from Mack's Prairie Wings. They have held up well and are warm.

How much insulation you need will depend on what type of hunting you are doing.  If you are standing for longperiods in thigh deep water by all means go with plenty of insulation.  I you need to walk for a mile or two wearing them & then will sit on the bank, you will sweat them up real bad & then you will freeze.  You probably need about 3 sets

Bugtussle is dead on.
I have one set from Cabelas that are 1600 gram super mags, there great in late Oct-Dec but in last August early Sept there a little warm. I would get a set with the Armor Flex, they are tough and don't rip.

I haven't duck hunted much since I left Montana about 1973. Back then I always got a new pair of hip boots every year for jump shooting the marshes south of Kalispell off the Big Fork hwy. They all had one thing in common, first day out within 30 minutes I'd tear a hole in them.

I went duck hunting with my brother this winter, first time in years. Don't have any hip boots or wadders anymore so he loaned me a pair of his.
Really nice neopreme wadders that are a bummer to get on. Very warm tho, until you step in the water, they leak!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone make hip boots or wadders that keep the water out?
 Even a blind squrrel find's an acorn sometime's![/quote]

Don the quality of the gear has improved alot since 73. But quality waders can still be hard to find. I have 5 sets of waders/hip boots and the only pair that leak is a pair that a black bear decided he wanted.
The Cabelas waders with the armor flex in them are almost indestructible.
I bought a pair of stocking foot dry plus wading pants for my brown bear hunt this spring but I suspect they aren't real tough. But they will be more comfortable then hip boots, so I thought it would be worth a shot trying them. If they work they will be great for early sept goose hunts.
My advice would be to stay away from Red Head and stearns. Haven't tried Herters for awhile but I would recommend the Cabelas brand for sure.

Check out the LaCrosse website.  They have a bargain section which has some pretty good deals.
