Odered my present today....
« on: December 16, 2005, 12:42:36 PM »
I've been a good boy this year, haven't bought any new encore stuff since I got my original set-up. (12" .44 mag w/ holosight). So, I'm adding the first rifle caliber to the line-up. I decided on a 15" .308 barrel to go with the Leupold 2X8 I bought earlier this year. (OK ...so I bought ONE thing :-D )I'm excited, as this is the first rifle caliber I will have ever shot in a handgun configuration. I rarely see any .308 barrels for sale on the used mkt, so those that own them must be pretty tickled with them. Shame of it all is I won't have time to get it set up and dialed in by the time deer season expires this year. Oh well, I'll get lots of practice in the off season (hopefully).
Those of you that have and shoot the .308 regularly, what factory ammo(s) do you find work well for you?....I unfortunately don't reload. I have some different .308 stuff in storage from a rifle I traded, and am anxious to see what a 180gr silvertip load feels like in this thing. I'm not recoil shy, but should I wear a football helmet the first time I touch one off?

Merry Christmas!
Mike

While I don't have a T/C in 308, I do have a 16.5" rifle in 308 and Winchester Silvertips (150gr I think, I bought  a case on clearance) shoot very well.   I suspect that performance form a 15" barrel will not suffer much.

The 308 is a good round, and many Factory load options.  you should be just fine.  Good news is it will be easy to find ammo.

Congrats on your decision!!  I have a SST 308 Encore that I shoot, but I reload and use 220gr MatchKing bullets in mine.  No need for protective head gear with it.  But it does buck in the hand.  I'm considering sending it to T/C for there muzzle brake.  Also on the agenda is a scope upgrade as 2x just doesn't cut it for my sixty year old eyes anymore.  Looking at picking up a Bushnell Trophy 2-6 after the holidays.  Also just got the stock blank the other day and will have Georgia Jim make some new furniture for it.

Doc,

Please post a pic of your new stock when it gets done. I've visited Ga Jim's site and looks like he does some pretty work. Right now I have the factory rubber grips on mine, but have been toying with getting some grey/black laminated stocks to mate to the stainless hardware.  What kind of wood did you pick for your's?

Best,
Mike

Yep, will post pics after Georgia Jim get them done.  Bought a blank from "Richards MicroFit" in California in Apachie Gold. Should be able to get three sets out of the blank, (2 Encore, 1 Contender) that will be used on my blue Encores in 7-08 and 22 K-Hornet and my blue Contender in 223 Remington. Still need to find a blank for the Stainless Steel Encore and my Armolly Contender to set them off.  Here's a picture of the blank color for my blue guns
