Long Barrels

I normally hunt with a Ruger Super BlackHawk 10 1/2in. 44 mag. , iron sights, I load 240xtp's over 23gr of H-110.  I've been looking for a new pistol with a longer barrel mainly for fun but also a little whitetail hunting and was thinking about the Uberti Cattleman Buntline with 18in. barrel in 45LC.  What kind of velocity/energy can I expect with regular factory hollowpoints???

Between 20 to 40 fps per inch.  :D

Yes with the Uberti you must keep the pressures to the SAAMI level and at that level I don't think you'll pick up the suggested 20-240 fps per inch of extra barrel. It has pretty well run out of steam long before 18" of barrel is reached. I think you'd do good to add 200 fps in an 18" barrel over a 5.5" barrel with factory level loads.

As much as I love long barreled revolvers there is such a thing as too much and to me 18" is way too much. I used and loved my S&W 29 with 10-5/8" barrel for many years. I still regret getting talked out of it. I used that gun on a wide variety of game in a lot of different states and it was for me about perfect. I later tried a Taurus M44 with 12" as a replacement and it was really too long to suit me and never delivered the accuracy of the S&W.

I'd stick with what you have and know you like. Wish I had.

Hmmm, so you think i'd be better off with the 12in.,  if that's the case I think I like the looks of the EMF/Dakota 12in better.  Any opinions between the two? Uberti or EMF/Dakota.  Really I just wanted the 18in as a novelty and thought I could hunt afew whitetails with it.  Thoughts? Opinions?

Yes you would have to stay within SAMMI pressures. But I still think the 20 to 40 fps per inch is right on the mark.  :D

I got to get to the range the other day with my 12" .44mag Encore.
The load that gave me 1" groups at 50 yds from my 7.5" SRH at 1260fps gave me 1410fps and .75" grouping in the Encore. Powder is AA#9 bullet was a LBT 280g WFNGC. H110 would probably give 1500 without much fuss.
 Encores are somewhat big and heafty, but it helps stabilize my aim, plus with a light load of AA#5 for about 1250 with the same bullet, and most game inside 100yds should prove to be a clean harvest.
Ever see that guy on T.V. that hits small 6" balloons at 200 yds with a big 454 revolver? Best part was when he pulled out his .38 snubbie and did the same thing.

           Yes I have seen that guy on TV, was it Bob Munden?  He's something else.  On a good day with no wind and lots of sunlight I can keep 4 or 5 rounds in a small coffee can @ 100yds with iron sights off of sandbags using my . a Ruger SBH 10 1/2  in .44 mag handloaded with 240xtp's and 23grs. of H-110.   I don't get many shots over 75yds. here in WV.
    I was just curious what kind of numbers to expect from the 18in. Uberti  Cattleman Buntline in 45LC  -vs- the 12in. EMF/Dakota Buntline in 45LC with factory ammo.
    Can anyone give me some rough numbers for any of these setups? including my SBH 10 1/2 as I have no chronograph.

  MidwayUSA lists the 45LC Speer GoldDot 250gr as 900fps@450lbs  ....test barrel length?
