« on: December 08, 2005, 11:52:12 PM »
I have my catolog in front of me and am trying to decide on a new muzzle loader.I am looking at the Knight Revolution and the Omega.I am sort of torn between the two but wonder if anybody has experience with the Knight.Looking for the pro's and con's of both rifles.Feel free to throw in your choice of rifle other then the ones that I have mentioned.Thankyou!

Of the two you mentioned, I would get the Omega. But looking at them all the Encore will always be my first choice. I have owned the Knight and it is a good M/L, but I don't like the difficulty of cleaning or the way it shoulders. The Encore seems to shoulder very natural. The omega is a good M/L also, but i like the option of the Encore with other barrels. JMHO.  :D

but you can buy a new gun for the price of a encore barrel.
i've heard 2 guys that owned the knight rev ,one says his won't group very well. the other he cleaned his last year by the book and this year the trigger locked up and wouldn't fire. the main complaint i hear is that they are to heavy from dealers.

Well, thanks men,I had an Omega,black/stainless follow me home today and a few goodies to go with it.I took the Leupold 1.5x5 off my 45-70 Guide Gun and mounted it with Warne Quick Release rings on a Weaver style base.I didn't know what to buy for components so I was aided by another deer hunter who has an Omega.I walked out of the store with 295 gr. Powerbelt bullets,Hodgdon's triple 7 pellets, and Winchester 209 primers. Now all I have to do is see if I can hit something.
I had an encore 209-50 in my hands but decided on the Omega since I really don't plan on buying barrels.I already have more rifle calibers then I need.
I'm really looking forward to shooting it tomarrow but first I have a date with two beagles and some bunnies.
Thanks for your help and good hunting.

If you hunt with your muzzleloader you will HATE the Omega, If you are a bench shooter you will really enjoy the Omega.

You will NOT be able to reload the Omega after the first shot without using a sledge hammer to drive the bullet down the barrel....
I have owned 3 new Omegas and had the same problem with all of them -Not being able to reload it without taking it apart to clean it and then reload it for the second shot.

Everyone calls this problem a crud ring problem but almost all crud ring problems are encountered using an Omega rifle, So I would speculate that the result of a crud ring is from an issue with the Omega itself and not the kind of powder you use or which conversion kit you have to purchase to correct the problem.

T/C will tell you that you have to swab between shots ( Which is BULL crap ) and is not an acceptable practice for a person HUNTING not bench shooting. You shouldn't have to buy a 50.00 breach plug to hopefully make the Omega shootable

I don't personally know of ANYONE that has bought an Omega that did NOT have this problem and they all spent a lot of money trying to get the Omega to be hunter friendly and  ( Being able to reload it after the first shot ) But I will give the Omega 1 thing and that it WILL SHOOT VERY TIGHT GROUPS if you clean it after every shot, But to a hunter this cleaning between shots is not acceptable.

By the way:  T/C had told me that everyone at Thompson Center has had their Omegas barrels lapped so they will load easier and they still had to swab between shots.

I have bought an Encore 209X50 after the 3 Omegas and do not have this problem with it and I am able to shoot it 15-20 times and not have to swab the barrel

I really do miss my Knight Bighorn and Wolverine rifles as they shot all day long without swabbing  and accuracy was very good...What a fool I was to sell them!

So my opinion would be skip the Omega and enjoy SHOOTING what ever you do buy.

***I just saw that you decided on the power belt bullets - You might not have any problems with that bullet as there is no sabot to deal with.
Good luck!

Whoops! Sounds like I might be dissapointed in my buying the Omega.I thought it was the way to go in today's in-line muzzel loader, but after reading some of the posts and Two Bear's comments,it appears that I was wrong. That doesn't surprise me,it is usually my luck to fork out a bunch of hard earned money only to find that what I bought is junk.I plan on shooting it for the first time today, maybe, just maybe,I got a good one.I certainly hope so.Of course,I bought the Triple 7 powder and 295 gr.Powerbelts, both components, being the less desireble of the Omega word,I see now after doing a deeper reserch.I hope someone has figured something out on the crud ring issue by now and also the "hard to load"second shot. Please let me know,if you have. Thanks for all your input,I respect your honesty.Good shooting !

Before you get to concerned, look at other reports from Omega owners. I have heard a lot of good about them from people here and buddies that have them. Just because one person had a bad experience with them does not make them bad.

Go shoot yours and make your own conclusion, then come back and report your experience.

I like the Knight rifles line but the Revolution feels like your carrying a 2x4 to me.  I played with one yesterday because I want to add another inline to my stable.  I was looking for a Knight just because I love my LK-93.  I think the Disc Elite with the thumbhole will be my next purchase.

While I don't own a Omega I dont think you'll be dissapointed in it . All that i have seen and that friends own seem to be solid inlines.  The point of reloading quickly for a second shot is a moot point when hunting with a muzzleloader. No deer is going to stand still while you reload after the first shot. Ive killed more than 25 deer with muzzleloaders most of them inlines.  I usually take my time and  swab the barrel with a spit patch after shooting at a deer and then reload.  Ive done this numerous times and then still wait longer and go find the deer if he didnt drop in sight. They are usually dead within 50 yards. Dont worry about hopw fast you can reload. Worry about how accurate the first shot is.
Good Luck

Hey all, don't get me wrong I think that the Omega is a very good shooting rifle (this is why I stayed with the omega and tried 3 of them before I decided to move on with the Encore ) but almost all who have purchased an Omega have had issues with it with the crud ring which makes reloading it VERY hard and a pain in the a$$.

Side note: The only reason that I sold my Knight rifles was because I am left handed and when walking with the Knight rifles the safety always got pushed to the fire position which is unsafe. And the Omega and the Encore has a hammer which works well for me being left handed.

Who knows maybe you will not have the issues that I and MANY others have run into with the Omega. Also keep in mind that you are using Power Belt bullets which may just be the ticket for being able to reload it...I don't know as I did not try any bullet without using the sabot.

My post was just to let you know what issues have surfaced and many many people on this web site have come across the same issues as I have, Some have put up with it and have adopted  the practice of cleaning / swabbing the barrel between shots, some have spent a lot of money with breech plugs, different powders, bullets and primers to make theirs a little more shootable.

Swabbing just was not something that I was willing to accept just to shoot the Omega as I have never had to do this before in my 20 + years of muzzleloading. And I too have taken many deer with several muzzleloaders and have not needed to use a second shot BUT if I ever need that second shot I would want to be able to do it without ramming the ramrod on a tree trunk (or what ever else is available) to seat the bullet. Also not having to clean / swab between shots makes your range time more enjoyable..At least for me it is.

I hope it works for you.

Two Bears, I understand completely what you were saying. Also I love my Encore M/L, I can shot it over 10 times with ease of loading in a row. I use triple7, Precision Rifle DC 195 gr. saboted bullets and a 25 ACP conversion. Even in the field, I don't have to worry about loading it a 2nd or 3rd time. The Encore is and always will be my first choice.  :D

Well,I got to fire off a few shots for the first time out of my Omega.I only shot two 5 shot groups at 50 yards, mainly to zero in the scope and form a starting point for todays shooting at 100 yards. At any rate,I am pleased.I used two Triple 7 pellets and a 295 hollow point powerbelt along with the new Remington Kleen bore primers and that load seemed a little whimpy and the first groups weren't all that impressive but without giving two pellets an honest try,I moved on to three pellets and then good things happened, all the bullets were touching but three inches high at 50 yards. Now I have a place to start.I have no doubt that the rifle will be accurate but I was more worried about the crud ring that everybody talked about.I am here to say that I think I worried for nothing but again,I only shot it ten times at that shooting session and I used a patch with no.13 and then a dry patch between shots. There was no evidence at all of a crud ring and after a good inspection followed by a quick cleaning job, with hot water and Dawn dish detergent, the barrel was as smooth as glass.
I know some of you are anxious to hear more so after I shoot it more with in the next few days or so,I'll start a new post and give a better range report.
