Help on a cartridge

I was wondering, would  an 8mm Mauser with a 185 gr. Core Lokt be enough to kill a Black Bear? It seems to me that it would have enough power, but I don't know enough yet to try it.

That depends on how dead you want to kill him!  I'd have no problem using the 8mm......should be up for most anything short of kodiack bear......

In short, yes it will kill a bear.  :D

You might also try a box of the S+B 196 soft points also as believe they are a little hotter load.  My newer mausers (like the m48) actually prefer the S+B for accuracy also.

Your mauser is plenty potent to kill most any thing in the lower 48 states.
Good luck :D .........Joe........

No, the 8mm will not even effect the bear, I am 100% sure that when the bullet strikes the bear, it will simply bounce off, and who knows, it might bounce off in your direction and hit you.

Im telling you, shooting that bear with 8mm is a good way to get your self shoot-at

Nice.  Black bears are classified as light skinned game, 8mm is plenty.

nasem I don't know if you were joking or not, But the old 8mm mauser has killed more game than you and i could walk around in a year. I have many friends that use the 8mm and they don't have any trouble doing it. I have personally guided many hunters and can vouch for the capabilitys of the 8mm on any north American game. I hope you were pulling our legs :D ...........Joe..............

armycar1 ain't you that guy that went to Alaska and got that big kodiak a few years ago?   Somthing tells me you want to buy a new gun. But if not just be boring like me and use your deer rifle. Iv'e come across so many people that use small guns in Wisconsin like the 30-30. In Minnesota I was supprised to see so many bear shot with a 20ga. Old pics of meat poles  of big bucks and so many times a big old bear for a bonus shot with 25-35's and 32 spcl. and even single shot shotguns.
