Patch per caliber size?
« on: January 09, 2006, 01:45:01 PM »
Am going to start making my own lubed patches using pillow ticking. Is there a certain dimension for each caliber(mine will be square)and what is the best way to mass lube these new patches? These lubed patches will be for .32, .36, .40, .50, and .54 roundball uses. In a short time last evening I cut 3 yd of cotton flannel into 1.5" squares for small bore cleaning.
Thanks for your assistance.

Well I  now use spit patches only and cut at the muzzle but at one time I did  cut patches and pre-lube .
What I did was take a  strip of material and  start a ball at the muzzle so the ball was just  flush .  I then pulled the ball, just yank on the strip of fabric and the ball will most times pop out . If not use a ball puller and  pop it out . This will leave an impression on the patch material of the ball , cut you patch about ¼ bigger and you will have more then enough .

Now as to lubing . I would take the  strips of patch material and fold it the size you want . Then fold the next one back . Keep doing this back and forth tell you have a strip of 15 or 20 patches. The strip should now look like an accordion. Now take  a good pair of scissor and round all the corners  . What your doing is something like when you where small and made paper snow flakes  for when you  open your  patches up  you will now find a series of  round patches joined  by a small piece of material in the middle of each patch . Spread your lube of choice onto   this row of patches and work it in good  then role them back up .
No longer will you have to dig for patches , just grab this row and  pull a patch off .

You can also lube before you  cut the shape of your patches but  I found my scissors didn’t cut as well that way. Hope that mad since to ya

I use a bullet board/loading block and cut 'em to fit. To saturate multiple patches put 'em in a container and melt the lube over 'em. Or nuke 'em.

of cotton flannel.

Well, that'll make a good cleaning patch alright.
sduve,,you've read all this stuff long enough. It looks like your ready to give up the argument of patch size and lube variations enough too understand. Wanna know the truch? It's so simple most folks today can't undersatnd.
Everyone looks for the "magiic" answer,,when 3# pounds of powder and 200 shots, will ,,,,,,
i'm a realist. i've not seen it all, but man ,,I've Been Around the block once or twice
