My 44 Mag Muzzle Brake

Sorry for starting a new topic guys. I have been posting things about the progress on another thread on this forum called "Compensator addon discussion" but Today I can't seem to post a reply. Weird though considering I can post a new topic? :roll:

SO Long story short is I was talking with my Brother (who is a gunsmith) about my Dan Wesson 44 mag. I had read that no one had a muzzle brake for it and that it seemed easy to me. He said he was sure he could do it. So I sent him my 8" heavy barrel and let him try. He also mounted my Weigland scope mount on it. He took a rifle muzzle brake, necked it down, cut new threads on both the barrel and the brake. That last step was to keep me from using it on a shorter barrel as he said the potential for debris getting in my face was too much.

The brake appears to be pretty effective. The recoil feels like a 357 Mag instead of a 44. My groups were pretty good at 30 yards. I was not really trying at this point as I was in a hurry to get to town and wife was being impatient.

Robb,
That is a great looking muzzle break.  If you had to guess, what percent of the recoil impulse do you think it reduces?  Does it reduce muzzle flip?

Hello guys, Thanks for the kind words.

Remember that so far I have only shot about 25 or so rounds out of it with this setup. I also only shot a few rounds out of the plain 8" barrel before I sent it to my brother. So for any comparison I will have to use the recoil of a 6" barrel which I did shoot quite alot.

As for the recoil reduction, I THINK that it is MUCH less then what I remember with the 6" barrel alone. Now, to be fair, I also was shooting th 6" with plain iron sights instead of with the holosight. Not really a fair comparison but it is all I had to work with. I can tell you that my first impression was very favorable and that I don't think it kicked much at all. Maybe similar to a 38 +P or a 357 mag.

As for muzzle flip, it is a muzzle brake. From what I understand (and from my very limited experience) it is designed to hold the barrel still in all directions thus reducing flip, recoil and improving accuracy. I think it flipped much less then the 6" but whether that is because of the extra weight or the brake I can't tell. The targets I posted were shot as fast as I could reload and aim. I don't think it was very long before I shot them all.
